I'll weigh in on this...

I don't think, nor I'm not sure if it's possible regardless, that one governing body should tell individual tournament directors what to do, regardless of the issue. I think they should have the freedom to chose what to allow and what not to allow and let the contestants pick and chose which tournaments they fish.

The key word there is freedom.

Then... you can argue the merits of type of lures used- and not used.

I do think that CS has the right to post the petition though... you can read and sign it or not.

I was contracted to laser scan and model a knock off version a few months back. To be honest, I didn't think much of it either when I first saw it. I've only casted it a few times and never caught anything with it. However, when you get it in the water you will immediately see why it is so effective. There's something about the baits moving in perfect rhythm that is extremely appealing to the eye, just like a real school of fish. You would think that 5, .045" wires would make the bait look fake, I assure you it does not. Not that I will ever use one again though. Like you it's just a personal choice.

UUmmmm, I just had an idea on a possible improvement. Are you able to PM any contacts to me???

I have to say the sight of that does bug me a little. But boy it sure looks fun...like cranking in a bag of waterlogged sweatshirts. I bet the runs and leaps were exhilarating.

On the other hand, he can still only keep his limit, and does it really hurt the fish more than a single hook rig? Does it hurt the fish more than allowing it to flop all over the deck of your boat? Does it hurt the fish more than tossing it in a box of luke-warm, low-oxygen water, beating the hell out of it all day, running it all over the lake, suffocating it for minutes on end, throwing it in a basket, then returning it to a strange cove with hundreds of other discombobulated and beaten detainees? I doubt it.

But it does dovetail nicely with the tournament mentality in general...complete removal of fun, just show me the money! I'd say it's a perfect fit.

I'd be more interested in seeing a petition on creel limits or culling rules, making tourneys CPR only, or a ban on tournaments altogether.

It's amazing how politics weave a thread through every aspect of our life. Even fishing. Legislate it? Leave it up to the individual to decide for themselves? That is always the question it seems.

Maybe everyone is being a bit hard on the OP. I mean, you'd have to admit that this method seems at best questionable. In truth I didn't, and don't plan to sign the petition, mainly because I don't personally care very much about rules for tournament fishing, and I don't know enough about the site that it is on, what agenda it might have etc. If the petition was coming from some source that I knew and trusted I'd be much more likely to sign. But I think CS is probably just trying to do a good thing, bringing to light a questionable method that may cause harm to fish populations, and maybe that's worth thinking about before folks continue to berate him.

Until moderators say otherwise it's his right to post the petition.

He can post it all he wants, but to yell at people telling them to read the petition when they are expressing their opposing views is a little excessive.

Thats a very powerful picture! I've never seen a lure get people so crazy so quickly...and you can see why. It's kind of like the fishing of live bait vs the artificials question to me, I choose not to do it. If someone wants to do it in a tourney, let them do it, just make it fair for everyone. Anytime money is involoved it will bring out the "best" in people ya know. The fish haven't seen this before and they're crazy for it, kind of like when the arkie jig first came out only an order of magnitude more efficient. I also think it brings out the "competition" instinct in the fish because they see their buddies getting something they don't have, then see another bait in their face and bingo. How many time have you been in a canoe or boat with your buddy who is reeling in a fish and have a big follower behind his fish...this is the type of lure that will catch your fish and that big follower at the same time.

it wasnt that he posted the petition it was the way he responded to the comments people made that most likely turned people off,

Fish always lose by being "got in and dressed." It is best to weigh them while they are in the water. The only really large one I ever caught got away with my leader when I first struck him. He weighed ten pounds.
