I've been fishing for a long time and have never caught anything over 21". Fish that big are extremely rare anymore. If you look at the water color and the fact that she was using a black spinnerbait, it's no surprise she caught a big fish. That's a great big fish pattern. I also think women are more patient and she was probably slowly reeling the bait back in...another reason for that catch. I bet she threw it right up against the bank on that cast!

While I have seen a fair number of fish in the 20" class most all were when I spooked them in the open and they fled for cover. I only held one in my hands about 20 years ago. Another was when I friend caught one within site of a very popular boat ramp. He had only been Smallmouth fishing for a year or so, I'd hate to think he'll never get another.

Yeah, the 20 inch mark is hard enough to attain; 21 inches is a rare fish indeed. If you fish in good water at optimum times of the year, you'll catch the occasional 20 incher, but you may still never catch a 21 incher. I've caught a few over the years (biggest by length I ever caught was 22 inches), but I well remember every one I've ever caught, and they seem to be getting more rare than ever.

This is my buddy Lonnie with a 21.5" he caught on the Meramec in 2010. Caught on a jig and craw in Feb I think.

Photo cropped to protect me from him and others. :have-a-nice-day:
