Nick Williams Posted March 28, 2012 Posted March 28, 2012 What's your favorite lure/bait for spawning bass? Or for the fly fisherman on here, what fly?? I always have trouble during the spawn season! - Nick
Gavin Posted March 28, 2012 Posted March 28, 2012 Surprised that a man of the cloth would fish in in a bass's bedroom.....Be fruitful, multiply....and all that good jazz...
Nick Williams Posted March 28, 2012 Author Posted March 28, 2012 Hm, not quite the answer I was looking for. - Nick
Dutch Posted March 28, 2012 Posted March 28, 2012 Prespawn I like soft stick baits and jerk baits with a few cranks thrown in for good luck.
ozark trout fisher Posted March 28, 2012 Posted March 28, 2012 I've been doing well lately with 1/4 ounce white spinnerbaits lately on the spinning rod, and black and olive woolly buggers on the fly rod. They aren't spawning yet though, at least in the lakes I'm fishing. If you do target spawners, make sure to release them all and as carefully as you can...Try not to wear them out too much during the fight; bring them in as quickly as possible. For that reason I like to use pretty heavy tackle in spawning season, preferably nothing lighter than 10 pound line. Good luck.
Smalliebigs Posted March 28, 2012 Posted March 28, 2012 Surprised that a man of the cloth would fish in in a bass's bedroom.....Be fruitful, multiply....and all that good jazz... Mr. Poppen I did a spit take when I read this....thank you very much, I needed a good laugh. I agree with Gavin....stay out of the fishes bedroom until they're done protecting their kids........just our opinion
stlfisher Posted March 28, 2012 Posted March 28, 2012 I don't usually fish for spawning fish on beds but do fish during the spawn for those fish that are done fooling around and the ones that may be getting ready too. They don't all do it at the same time. Noticed some largemouth in pond's last weekend that were getting ready to spawn and few on beds. That is just crazy early to me. Anyway, my all time favorite bait for pond largemouth is Zoom's horny toad. I let it sink and slowly twitch it back or carolina rig it. It works on top too, but I have made a killing fishing it deep... the way it is not intended. For my fly rod I usually throw a Bugger, a slumpuster, and some clousers in minnow and bluegill colors. Popper's are a blast too. I have some big stuff tied up to give it a go tonight.
Wayne SW/MO Posted March 28, 2012 Posted March 28, 2012 I'm not much of a fan of nest fishing on rivers, but if I did I would throw a lizard. Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.

No, don't get my wrong, I don't bother the bass sitting on a nest, but stlfisher is right, not all bass spawn at the exact same time, but the lures used during the spawn time, this general time of year, always stump me. So I was looking to see what everyone thought. - Nick
drew03cmc Posted March 28, 2012 Posted March 28, 2012 A soft craw or tube will work to catch lazy fish, and for active fish, you can trick them into hitting a shallow running crank or spinnerbait banged off cover. Andy
