KATroutman13 Posted April 24, 2012 Posted April 24, 2012 Okay, I have one of those inflatable pontoon boats. The toons are 10 feet long and it has a steel frame. I bent some steel sheeting to make my transom and it works perfectly for the trolling motor. I know that I do not have to register that boat with the trolling motor on it. However, I am in the process of fixing a small 1.75hp Sears Gamefisher motor. If I put that thing on the back of that inflatable pontoon, do I have to register it? Thoughts, suggestions, snide remarks?
Al Agnew Posted April 24, 2012 Posted April 24, 2012 Actually, a trolling motor qualifies as a motor in Missouri, so if you use a trolling motor you have to register your watercraft. While I don't think the law specifically addresses inflatables, I suspect that you have to register it.
Addicted to Creeks Posted April 25, 2012 Posted April 25, 2012 im confused then, because Hunnewell Lake has boats to take out and allows you to bring a trolling motor to attach to the boat....if you have to register a private craft with a trolling motor how can they just give one away for a day? im not complaining im just curious Fish always lose by being "got in and dressed." It is best to weigh them while they are in the water. The only really large one I ever caught got away with my leader when I first struck him. He weighed ten pounds. —Charles Dudley Warner
fishinwrench Posted April 25, 2012 Posted April 25, 2012 Hunnewells boats are probably registered. You can switch motors on a registered boat without making any changes to the registration of the boat.
Daryk Campbell Sr Posted April 25, 2012 Posted April 25, 2012 As has been stated previously, you are required to register a watercraft if it is powered, whether it be electric or gas. Now, to answer your question, you DO have to register the gasoline engine, but you DO NOT have to register an electric motor. In order to register the craft/boat, along with the gas engine, you do need titles. I recently went through the registration process on a 10 foot jon boat so that I could use it under electric power. Money is just ink and paper, worthless until it switches hands, and worthless again until the next transaction. KATroutman13 Posted April 25, 2012 Author Posted April 25, 2012 Hmm, interesting. Thanks for the input. A few years ago, I called the DOR and told them about the craft and putting a trolling motor (electric) on it and I was told I did not have to register the boat (might be the inflatable thing). I guess I will give them a call and ask again...if I ever get that motor running.
Gavin Posted April 25, 2012 Posted April 25, 2012 You need to talk with Missouri Water Patrol...have your boat and motor inspected and get titles by affidavit before you head to DOR...Have fun!
ness Posted April 25, 2012 Posted April 25, 2012 There was just a thread on here a week or two ago about titling and registration, and the guy got steered wrong by the state people answering questions. I think I'd go through the official web sites of the various MO agencies and learn as much as you can before calling anybody. Good luck, and if you've got any pics I'd like to see how you rigged up that pontoon boat. John
KATroutman13 Posted April 26, 2012 Author Posted April 26, 2012 Gavin, Great advice. Thanks. I will certainly do that Ness. I've got to get the thing running first, otherwise, I won't waste my time with the titling, etc. Wes
