fishinwrench Posted May 9, 2012 Posted May 9, 2012 Why do I have this vision of John Turturro beating on your door some dark rainy nite..... "You stooole My bass... and you changed the tail !"
Al Agnew Posted May 9, 2012 Posted May 9, 2012 You see a lot of amateur artists who paint just like Bob Ross only worse. The guy was an entertainer, and he made it look so easy that a lot of people were convinced they could do it. I gotta wonder how many of them ever went past the Ross generic trees and clouds and mountains and cabins and lakes to depicting real landscapes and light. I watched his show once in a while, but can't say I ever got anything out of it that I could use. However, maybe I go way too far with realism. When I paint a tree, I want the viewer to recognize the species. When I paint water, I want it to look like water really looks under the specific weather conditions that I'm depicting. But does the average viewer really appreciate the difference, or do they just look at a Ross demonstration and think, "Yep, that looks like water alright" ?

I think you kind of get into a trance with Bob's voice and before you know it, you can't stop watching. I'll never forget watching the nature channel one time and there happened to be 6 people in the room, All of the sudden it dawned on me that we were all totally silent watching a deer chew on a leaf... btw, I appreciate the difference "Honor is a man's gift to himself" Rob Roy McGregor
Chief Grey Bear Posted May 9, 2012 Posted May 9, 2012 Chief, the newspaper would be public record, if Lilley want's to share the date of publication and the paper he saw it in we could all look it up. As for the suit, most likely it was filed and upon settlement dismissed, so there may not be a record of it that's available publicly. Oh, I don't care to read it, I just thought that actions of the court were public record. You see a lot of amateur artists who paint just like Bob Ross only worse. I understand what you are saying about Bob but, I think what he was trying to do was teach the basic techniques. I guess art really is in the eye of the beholder. I would actually take one of Bob's works over the multi-million dollar stuff I see. Of course I would take one of yours too. I think you do incrediable stuff. I am sure we all think we are pretty good cooks too. I know I really like some of the stuff I create. And I am sure you are the same. And sometimes I am sure you even get a little fancy with your cooking. But if a "real chef" tasted some of our stuff, they most likely would turn their nose up at it. And on the flip side of that, some of that crap they are creating, is just that...crap!
