Jack Jones Posted May 9, 2012 Posted May 9, 2012 My go to plastic right now is a 4 in pumpkin finesse worm on a shakey head. It seems to produce well in the waters I've used it. I wanted to get an idea of what others like in terms of plastics for the smallmouths. Preferences on baits, colors, sizes, etc....Feel free to share. et84 Posted May 9, 2012 Posted May 9, 2012 Been chasing them on the fly this year (clousers/ zonkers), but last summer my go-to was a pumpkin color baby brush hog T-rigged on a 3/0 with a 1/8 oz. sinker. Gavin Posted May 9, 2012 Posted May 9, 2012 Hard to top a Zoom Fluke in the summer time 5.25" not the little one..and if they wont eat that a 4" Chomper Hula Grub or a 4" Zoom Fat Albert Curly Tail Grub.
Blazerman Posted May 9, 2012 Posted May 9, 2012 I use the exact same bait (baby brush hog) rigged the same way. Actually my son uses it now more than I do. I also like a culprit jerk bait on a 1/8 oz jig head with the hook exposed. I usually tear off some so that is about 3.5” long. It is great for skipping up under trees and letting it fall slowly with twitches. Or letting it fall into deeper holes. Catches everything. My son got these two on back to back cast with the brush hog.
cnr Posted May 9, 2012 Posted May 9, 2012 I second the 5" Zoom Fluke (in white). It's on my rod most of the day and seems to produce bigger fish than a smaller bait.
moguy1973 Posted May 9, 2012 Posted May 9, 2012 Yep. For plastics, most of mine come on white super flukes. -- JimIf people concentrated on the really important things in life, there'd be a shortage of fishing poles. -- Doug Larson
Bird Watcher Posted May 9, 2012 Posted May 9, 2012 Reaction Innovations Smallie Beaver in the color of California on a brown Chomper stand up jig head in 3/8 oz for me.
Jack Jones Posted May 9, 2012 Author Posted May 9, 2012 I just happen to have a package of Zoom Flukes in pearl. How are you all rigging it? I was going to go with either a 3/0 hook weightless (but that'd be tough to cast) or a slider hook that has the weight attached. eric1978 Posted May 9, 2012 Posted May 9, 2012 Weightless, Jack. T-rigged. And twitch it like a crackhead. Looks like I'm alone in that I prefer the 4" flukes, but I buy mine from a small plastics company and they're a little meatier than the typical 4"ers you see.
