UnCivE Posted August 27, 2012 Posted August 27, 2012 Was fishing a tournament in the summer at night (great idea, huh) on LOZ a few years ago, and on the way back, on the main lake we got missed by a giant yacht close enough I coulda touched it. Guy had no idea what the running lights meant or was too drunk to care... my buddy tried to get out of the way several times and the boat corrected to the same course... eventually he just killed it and we crossed our fingers. I have also personally been in a 18 ft ski/pleasure boat that sank, but that's another story. I wasn't driving.
laker67 Posted August 28, 2012 Posted August 28, 2012 Living here on loz, the newest most stupid mistake is only a weekend away.
fishinwrench Posted August 28, 2012 Posted August 28, 2012 Gavin's pic brought back a fond memory. I once rode a canoe down a sledding path (called Widowmaker hill). I thought I'd be able to steer by dragging the paddle on one side or the other.... still not clear on why that doesn't work. The plan was to get a hilarious video to stick on TY, but the canoe got sideways, I tried to "rudder it back straight" and rolled. I almost broke my neck so I didn't try a second run. Being in a kayak though, with your butt closer to the ground it should work great.

Gilly Posted August 28, 2012 Posted August 28, 2012 I may have to retract my earlier statement. Good Lord, that pop in my nose brought tears to my eyes......... www.drydock516.com
Gavin Posted August 28, 2012 Posted August 28, 2012 I can round up that yellow kayak and a case of Bud-Light if you want to give it a go;>)! He almost rolled that one too... Dumbest I've ever seen...coupla drunks ejected from a jet boat w/o the kill switch engaged. About ten seconds of terror on the water till that boat beached itself....wonder why my wife refuses to float below Powdermill anymore.
rps Posted August 28, 2012 Posted August 28, 2012 I lost a kid I coached when he decided to ride a blow up float down a creek after a victory party and rainstorm. The water wedged him into a drain pipe from which he could not escape or breath. Stupid. Inexcusable. Damnable. Miss you Greg.

One of my hopes in life is that I will instill just enough caution in my girls that they would think twice before doing something like that. Only worried about the older one. Sorry about your student, very very sad. "Honor is a man's gift to himself" Rob Roy McGregor
Tim Smith Posted August 28, 2012 Posted August 28, 2012 That's the shame about those stupid mistakes...they have real consequences and we don't always get lucky enough to avoid them. Sorry about your student, rps. I'll put mine in the back pocket for now.
Feathers and Fins Posted August 28, 2012 Posted August 28, 2012 Seen many in my life but the worse were always people who had no local knowledge trying to get out Sebastian and Jupiter inlets on outgoing tides with onshore winds. Worse of those was some people who obviously were first time boaters with a 16 foot ranger that tried to idle out the inlet and found that the 5 ft rollers were to much and they in turn put the power to a wave and caught it sideways forcing them into the rocks. Boat sank fast!!! Had another group watch myself and a few other boats punch the waves to get out, they must have thought we could do it so could they and they ended up on the rocks. I came to the firm conviction local knowledge of the dangers of where you fish is a life saver and unless you know those waters never go where it appears might be dangerous and when in doubt slow down to a safe speed. https://www.facebook.com/pages/Beaver-Lake-Arkansas-Fishing-Report/745541178798856
