With the cold weather here, I'm beginning to get my winter gear ready. That means jigs and jerkbaits. I own quite a few LC Pointers and I know the success that the Megabass Ito Vision 110's have had but at their price point they're a little expensive for me. I've heard a lot of good reviews on the Lucky Strike RC STX Jerkbaits but of course the split rings and hooks are worthless. I've replaced the split rings, but I know how sensitive suspending jerkbaits can be to even the slightest adjustments, so I have yet to replace the hooks. I'd like to replace them with #6 Mustad KVD trebles but I'm afraid they'll be too heavy. Have any of you replaced the trebles on these Lucky Strike RC STX Jerkbaits? If so, what have you used and have they affected the action of the bait for better or worse?

I add lead to almost all my jerkbaits during the cold water period so I don't worry about the hooks being too heavy. But then again, I don't worry about the original hooks and split rings on that bait. they seem sharo to me and the rings have not failed me yet.

FWIW, I have NOT had any luck with the RC STX. I've given them a pretty good try as well. I threw Megabass last time out and caught them pretty good though.

Try the #6's...good hook..and adust with some suspendots, lead wire. Maybe pop the mid hook off, then and add a dot or two. Not a bad bait.

I love the mustad triple grip hooks, they are what I use when I replace hooks on a crank/jerkbait.

everything in this post is purely opinion and is said to annoy you.

Daiichi Death Traps #6, they are scary sharp.

Plus 1. Great hooks and they do not impact the suspending action of the STX. I confirmed that with several of those baits last winter. The split ring problem seemed to only be an issue on the early STX's.

You'll want to change the hooks on those Vision 110's, too. I've had at least as many problems with those hooks as I have the hooks on the STX.

Caught my best bass last winter on the STX. I have 15-20 of the Vision 110's but consider them all to be bottom of the tacklebox baits now. The STX just works better for me.

I haven't had a problem with the stock hooks and I had some of the very first ones - maybe those were a bad run?

I've been stuck once with the reverse barb Megabass 110 hooks, the shoestring trick doesnt work with those reverse barb hooks (I guess), so I had to push it thru and cut off the barb...lucky it wasn't in too deep. I've also been told these hooks straighten out on a bigger bass. No good!

When I replace trebles I always go with either the KVD short shanks, or the Gamakatsu EWG trebles. The Gama's are my choice if the hooks are far enough apart that they dont interfere with each other. Gamakatsu makes a short shank but its a round bend. The Magic eye on the short shank trebles is pretty cool becuase you dont need split ring pliers to replace the hooks.

I had several of the STX's when they first came out and it was hit and miss for me. The majority of them I had no problem with but a few I did have issues with the split rings. Regardless I still like the LC Pointers and Megabass better.

to each his own, but I do not and will not use the ewg style treble hooks. I use the round bend hooks. Yes, the Megabass hooks are wimpy. Big walleye destroy them. Replacements of the factory Megabass hooks are available. Red's in Lakeveiw carries them.

Jeb, I'll trade you two STX for each of the MegaBass you want to get rid of. Got Muddy, I've got a pile of Triple Grips that I took off of cranks that came with them. Never fished. I'd love to sell them to you.
