stlfisher Posted February 10, 2013 Posted February 10, 2013 my very first rod was a 6 weight and while mine wasn't great for everything it was good for almost everything. if i had only rod to fish bluegill, trout, and bass that would be my choice.
Nighthawk Posted February 10, 2013 Posted February 10, 2013 the former TFO rep in the Springfield area told me (and I agree) that you only need 3 fly rods; 4,6, and 8 wt. and the 6 is most versatile. you made a good buy.
duckydoty Posted February 10, 2013 Posted February 10, 2013 Is there really that much difference between a 5 wt and a 6wt? I would think that the speed of the rod would be the defining factor. If I'm wrong, please enlighten me. I have a 3 wt that is pretty slow and a 5 wt that I would say is medium fast.I also overline my 5 wt to a 6 wt line. I'm actually thinking about a 7 wt or even an 8 wt for bass. If you got a great deal on the rod I say great enjoy it. I'd probably buy it too. There is not much difference between the 5 and 6 but enough to make a difference when fishing 7x tippet or trying to get 10 more feet in your cast while throwing a streamer. I'm pretty rough on 7X with a 4 wt. Every Saint has a past, every Sinner has a future. On Instagram @hamneedstofish
laker67 Posted February 10, 2013 Posted February 10, 2013 I'm pretty rough on 7X with a 4 wt. Not me, I could land Duane with seven x, and he could use five x.
duckydoty Posted February 10, 2013 Posted February 10, 2013 You could probably get me in with 8x if you got a hook just right in my ear A Little Rain Won't Hurt Them Fish.....They're Already Wet!! Visit my website at.. Ozark Trout Runners
Wayne SW/MO Posted February 10, 2013 Posted February 10, 2013 A 6 wt was my main rod for decades. I'm more inclined toward 7 and 8wts now, but that's because of my targets and not because of any 6wt limitations in this area. In Missouri if you fish anywhere but the parks you never have the perfect rod, but a 6 will keep you close. Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.
Members Flyfsh Posted February 10, 2013 Members Posted February 10, 2013 I have landed 4.5' spoonbill I didn't mean to snag. I also landed a 16' striper all with a 6 weight. Also works great for trout. Besides you said it was a good deal so we don't have to justify it to ourself. :-) Jim

mhall02 Posted February 10, 2013 Posted February 10, 2013 Just bought one of these combos over Christmas for $39, 9' six wt. I haven't had a six weight in a while, my other is a St. Croix 7 or 7.5' 4wt, great for the small trout streams but thought I would have bigger rod for bass and bigger trout streams (Taney, Bennett, etc.). We will see how this setup works, price seemed right. http://www.cabelas.com/product/Fishing/Rod-Reel-Combos/Fly-Fishing-Rod-Reel-Combos%7C/pc/104793480/c/104762880/sc/105571980/Cabelas-Cahill-Fly-Rod-and-Reel-Outfit/732362.uts?destination=%2Fcatalog%2Fbrowse%2Ffishing-rod-reel-combos-fly-fishing-rod-reel-combos%2F_%2FN-1104843%2FNs-CATEGORY_SEQ_105571980%3FWTz_l%3DUnknown%253Bcat104793480%253Bcat104762880&WTz_l=Unknown%3Bcat104793480%3Bcat104762880%3Bcat105571980
