I keep my line pretty basic and throw Trilene Low-vis Green mono on most things...blades, swimbaits, cranks, etc. I throw H20 Fluro on most bottom stuff or jerkbaits. Concerning how hard you set the hook I think a lot depends on the cover you are fishing. If I am flipping bushes or heavy cover I jerk pretty hard to get the fish out of cover not necessarly for hook penetration.

One suggestion I would offer on breaking off on the hookset would be to consider your rod action. I use a lighter rod than I did in the pre-fluorocarbon days ... still a mediium-heavy power but fast action instead of extra fast. The slightly whippier tip absorbs some of the shock of the hookset for those of us like me and Bill who can't help ourselves and have to jerk when one bites. My favorite for flipping docks is a 6-8 or 6-10 Shimano Crucial or Duckett Micro Magic. Again, medium-heavy power but fast action instead of extra fast.

I agree with Champ on that one. I use the 6'10" cara in 5 power instead of 6. That allows me to use 10 pound fluoro and still not snap the line like I would with a faster tipped rod...

I have had very good success with Berkley's Fluro. I just bought 4 spools at Wmart for 10-11 a spool, at BPS and Cabela's they have raised the price to 15-17/spool this year. Berkley has a mail in rebate right now. On the $45 I just spent I will get $15 back for a mail in rebate. That is only 7.50/spool.

I have used 10# for my baitcasters and 6# for my spinning reels. I always check for freys and never have had a fish break off. I have caught up to 5# smallies and 7# large mouth.

I also have Suffix Mono for my top water. I use #14, and just bought a 600 yard spool at the BPS special for $5.

I also have a baitcaster with braid for flipping dock or for top water. Sometimes I will use the braid for a Carolina rig.

Hope this helps

That same power rod is excellent for deep diving crankbaits or square bills.
