Flysmallie Posted June 27, 2013 Posted June 27, 2013 I like black with a single colorado blade. Used to be one that had a black blade as well that always fished well.
exiledguide Posted June 27, 2013 Posted June 27, 2013 Ya , I believe Flysmallie is right and I like it to weigh a 1/2oz and made by Stan Sloan's company it's called the Zorro Rattlin Agravator and the black blade would be my choice also and I really like to stop that bait where there is structure drop off or heavy cover and let it helicopter on a tight line. That short arm has been catching largemouth for me since the 1960's when I used Virgil Wards Tarantula and Scorpion short arm spinner baits. I'm glad you posted this I had forgotten how much fun it is to drop that bait in the dark and feel the blade turning and all of a sudden you feel no vibration or something, as Billy Westmoreland used to say, "nock the fire out of it". It's the one bait I always use heavy line on because usually you are you are pulling fish out of heavy cover in the dark and there is no way I'm going to reach in a dark brushpile and try to lip a fish in the dark ever again.......I also like to use a short arm for smallies I don't know why I just seem to do better.
Jerry Rapp Posted June 27, 2013 Posted June 27, 2013 a black Bass Buster Scorpion, 1/2 oz, with a big Colorado blade, and a black #11 uncle josh frog behind it. Memories....... Crank it just fast enough to feel the blade rotating.
Dutch Posted June 28, 2013 Posted June 28, 2013 Moonless night---tandem black/red with #5 and #7 Colorado copper slow rolled Bright moon---short arm single spin white with a #5 Colorado silver slow rolled No trailers
Guest Brian B. Posted June 28, 2013 Posted June 28, 2013 Never been much for the night fishing- everything is just so much more frustrating, LOL... And that's not to metion the damng bugs...
fshndoug Posted June 28, 2013 Posted June 28, 2013 I throw a 3/8 oz. black.black blue, black red, black brown single spin with #5 colorado blade.Gold is an excellent choice with a black nickel blade a close second.Short arm baits work the best.It must have a sampo swivel.Six feet of water or less is preferred for this size bait.Throw close to the bank ,raise the rod to start the blade spinning, reel a few turns, slowly lower the rod, take up the slack,if it is heavey set the hook.I seldom use a straight retrieve.I make my baits with.040 wire and 5/0 owner hooks.Deeper water calls for heavier baits.A #11 pork frog in a dark color such as blue/black seems to entice the fish to hold on longer.Clear water lakes work best.I fish 11pm-5am on nights with out alot of moon. The darker the better.
stlfisher Posted June 30, 2013 Posted June 30, 2013 black skirt with silver colorado blade for me as well. like the gold blade in dingy water.
