Bill Babler Posted July 10, 2013 Author Posted July 10, 2013 Great points by all. As Denny said it can be a bargaining tool, but there is the fact that the dealers may not have them available to sell to you reguardless. If the extra two years are a deal breaker and they have not been in the past, as lots of folks pasted up on them. It may be an issue. I'm thinking with the low interest now that the two extra years might not be that big of an issue. My wife bought a new 2011 Malibu and it is less money than the 250 ProXs with the rigging and the Mercury Smart Craft package. Nice blog http://whiteriveroutfitters.com http://whiteriverlodgebb.com
merc1997 Bo Posted July 12, 2013 Posted July 12, 2013 from my prospective, from the price outboards are they should run for 10 years without any problems, but for the most part with any of them anymore, you do not know which time you start it up that it will shell. we certainly expect a car to perform with consequence for a much longer period of time, and there is a whole lot more to an automobile. but, as long as we consumers keep buying the industries sub- standard products that is what we will keep getting. i know that the terrible fuel we get is a source of problems, but cars have dealt with it. the old motors of a long time ago, many are still running like tops and are used everyday. i had an '85 200hp merc that is still running to this day, and there is not any telling how many hours that motor was run at 6200 rpm's for an hour at a time. wish i had that old motor back. lower unit problems are more common now also, and guess why that might be? it is called powder poured gears instead of a machined gear. the manufactures are charging a very premium price for their engines, but are not using the best parts, just my opinion. everytime there is a warranty issue with any brand, the cost of taking care of that warranty is added right to the price of the next motor. consumers pay for the cost of supplying motors to the pros. i know there will be lots of aurguments, but i just believe the marine outboard manufactures need lots of improvements in making a motor that will last the way they used to. bo Quill when you bought your boat it was a different deal. You probably paid $300.00 for the extra 2 yrs. Yes to some it was a no-brainer. To others, and I mean more did not than did purchase it. I know several guides that did not spend the extra 3 hundred at the time and are now going to be really sorry. They just assumed they or to whom ever they sold their boats could buy the extended warranty. I was also fortunate on my 2012 and purchased the extra 2 yrs. for the $300.00 figure. I believe they either called it 5 and drive or 3+2. Fish, of course I drive a Mercury. I don't know how they are really able to extend those out to the 5 yrs. Man that is a long time, but they must have uber confidence in their products not having problems for that period. You can also tell when the economy starts to improve by the boating industry. When they start to sell boats and motors things start to change. When you can finance boats for 2.25 percent either new or pre-owned it keeps them moving out of the stores.

You have choices. More in fact than you ever had "back in the day". Nobody needs a premium 20+ft. bass rocket with state of the art sonar, GPS programmed trolling motors, and seats that make your @$$ laugh. You can still run a 2.4L mixer on a 80-something Charger/Champ/Ranger if you want, there's plenty still around and you can still catch buttloads of fish and even win tournaments out of them. You don't have to get a second mortgage on your home in order to own a good dependable fishing boat....but you do if you want one as fresh and new as 85% of the other guys at the ramp. It's just a matter of who you feel the need to please.
fishinwrench Posted July 12, 2013 Posted July 12, 2013 Lower unit failure? Seen a bunch of them, but can't ever recall one due to "cheesy gear failure". Gears that are harder than they need to be would be a worse scenario. The difference between a 700.00 gearcase overhaul and a 3500.00 lower unit replacement after hitting a log.
fishinwrench Posted July 12, 2013 Posted July 12, 2013 Look cool or Feel cool? Because the "Lookin" is harder to pull off than you realize. The folks in lesser boats don't think you look cool, they hate your guts. And the guys in nicer boats think you look like a shitbum wannabe poser. The only people you look cool to in your fancy new rig are young boys that hope to grow up and have one someday, and they'll wreck their first marriage getting one. So why ya wanna go screwing up the youth of America's future by flaunting pretty new boats around? It's bad enough that we're passing our debt down to them, let's not rub it in their face while we do it.
exiledguide Posted July 12, 2013 Posted July 12, 2013 Wrench,I figured I'd start you up. I'm old school like you. Actually I'm a lot older school than you. I have no idea why these guy take on long term debt for a boat that is not going to make them any money and a tow that they have to finance. I'm always amazed at the amount of money people pay for rods and reels fly lines. Now if fishing is your business that's a different story.
crazy4fishin Posted July 12, 2013 Posted July 12, 2013 Wrench - I wish you would tell us what you feel instead of beating around the bush I am sure that it would make you feel better and save you counseling fees.....but you are right.....I admit I am as bad as a Bass looking at that flashy spinner bait when looking at those Rangers etc. Man I sure would like to have one of those - then my wife has "convinced" me that "we" are fine with what we have. O to win the lottery..... C4F Crazy4fishinA Cornhusker
