Jason R. Posted August 2, 2013 Posted August 2, 2013 Billet- i tie the foam wiggle minnows too. I just buy the preformed foam at the fly shop- its not really expensive and i think you get 6 bodies. For as often as I use that particular fly, i decided I'd rather just buy the bodies. The balsa version is easier to carve than a balsa popper to be honest and it wiggles better that the foam version. http://flyinthesouth.com/
mic Posted August 13, 2013 Posted August 13, 2013 Gents, let me tell you these poppers are even better in your hand then in these picks. I can't wait to try them out. Billet... great job dude.

mic Posted August 20, 2013 Posted August 20, 2013 Well, I finally got to try out Billet's popper. Man, it works better then in looks. Its casts nicely and lands softly. The best part is a quick pop brings a nice burp, but unlike other poppers, it dives and then floats up... much like a diver. I think it is because the hook sits low on the face. So the proof is in the pudding. Caught bass and bluegill to include this bull. The pick doesn't do it justice but the tail went an inch or more past my watch band, and I barely got my hands around it. Billet great job. PS... what is the spinner tool you used after putting on the epoxy?
Flysmallie Posted August 20, 2013 Posted August 20, 2013 and I barely got my hands around it. Of course he fails to mention that he has the hands of a 10 year old girl.

Old plug Posted August 20, 2013 Posted August 20, 2013 I just sent a private msg to wrench about fly rod poppers. I think that the poppers and fly rod fishing is going to show up one of these days on the big tournament trails. There is nothing except pitching that can saturate a area with less disturbance than a fly rod. The only thing that comes even close is pitching. But Pitching is a get in there face type approach. Where a fly rod s a stand off thing. It would maybe take salt water fly rods and flys to do it but I think it could.
Old plug Posted August 20, 2013 Posted August 20, 2013 I never knew that. That is nit fair. It probably has to do with big business and the shoving if their products down the throats if fishermen. I would love to see that challenged. That would never stand up to a test. myself Ido not fish a fly rod because because of arthritis.
BilletHead Posted August 20, 2013 Author Posted August 20, 2013 Got your message Mic, well done and nice fish. Your spinners look nice too. Hard to understand about the fly rod thing on bass tourneys. I thought you could use one if it is like seven and a half foot long? I have a friend who lives in Idaho and guides steelhead fisherman. He calls fly fisherman fairy stickers. Are the pros afraid of fairy stickers? Just joking I couldn't compete with a pro much less with a girl as Mrs. BilletHead out fished me last trip Someone needs to get a small OA fly rod gathering for bass somewhere. Just for grins see who could catch a winning limit. (photos of length of your best six). Mic my dryer is a stonefly turner. It turns rods too. I cannot remember how much I gave for it. Must of been a good price or I got a discount or I wouldn't of got it. Takes aa batteries.
