If a bunch of guys want to put their stream fishing skills against one another for a cash prize then why not have a casting contest combined with a canoe/kayak obstacle course that includes shuttles, portages, and surprise paintball dodging from "landowners" ?

Anyone can catch a nice bass, just roll the dice or flip a coin and call your winner. No need to kill or relocate a bunch of river Smallmouth. Bad idea, I hate it.

Hopefully not many people will show up. I may be down there on Saturday anyways so I will check it out. I'm pretty sure only locals will show, but that is bad enough.

I dont see how fish could possibly be kept alive and released safely. Maybe you could get some pictures of dead fish. Wouldn't it be something if nobody won because no live fish were weighed in.

His father touches the Claw in spite of Kevin's warnings and breaks two legs just as a thunderstorm tears the house apart. Kevin runs away with the Claw. He becomes captain of the Greasy Bastard, a small ship carrying rubber goods between England and Burma. Michael Palin, Terry Jones, 1974

I'd like to be in charge of that tournament. I'd make a few changes to the rules

CATCH AND RELEASE TOURNAMENT, ARTIFICIAL LURES ONLY.

1. Submit 3 date and time stamped photos of longest fish.

2. Artificials only. Photo 1 must show fish in water with lure visible.

3. Photo 2 must show fish and measuring device

4. Photo 3 must show fish being released unharmed

I like your rules Terrieman and I think it would be cool to do something like that just here on OAF. But how do you submit a photo with a date and time stamp if your camera won't do that? I'm carrying a lot of money down the river in camera gear but it does not have the ability to put on a date/time stamp. I can fudge it and that brings up another issue, that date/time stamp can easily be fudged. I can do it in a matter of a few minutes.

There is some info embedded in the file when the pic is taken, called EXIF data, but there are problems with that as well.

The RiverBassin Trail was set up pretty good. There was a meeting the night before where everyone was given an official measuring board and a "secret" item that must be visible in the picture. Ours was a sticker. A valid fish had to be photographed on the ruler, with that sticker, as well as our boat number visible in the pic. Check in was at 1600 and at that point you turned your SIM card in to the tournament director. They downloaded your photos and returned your card.

You got the point though, there's no need to drag fish anywhere to have a tournament, other than to have a public weigh in spectacle ala BASS et al.

Oh yeah I get your point and like it. And I wasn't trying to be a jerk by blowing holes in your idea, just trying to figure out a way to make it work. The info that Hojo posted would make it work.

If BASS and all the rest of the bass tournaments would go C&R that would go a long way to make me feel better about tournaments in general. And no problem about blowing holes in my idea, I'm sure it's not mine in the first place anyway.

BASS and others will never do it because that is part of the attraction. But they do try and do everything they can to take care of the fish in most cases. Better than anything this tournament will be able to do. Having a tournament on a lake is a lot easier to handle than having it on a river. I just don't see how it's possible to take care of the fish on a small river like these.
