yaknar Posted August 25, 2013 Posted August 25, 2013 I kayaked down to Delaware this weekend. It was probably my slowest fishing day this season. I have been told it gets slower later into fishing season. I caught a handful but not a lot and nothing big. So my only report is that the suckers were hitting Rapala crankbaits. When the fishing gets slow I breakout the lures I bought this year but haven't used yet, the ones that call to me when I'm walking through BP or surfing the net. The one lure someone told me it looks like a Disney character and it would only be good at catching clowns. And I'm not real fast or good at tying knots. I was using the improved clinch knot and someone suggest I try the Pitzen (16-20) knot. Has anyone had any experience with this knot? I don't know what everyone else uses but I can tie this one pretty fast. Great day to be on the river . Catching and Releasing...
Jerry Rapp Posted August 25, 2013 Posted August 25, 2013 improved clinch knot is one of the best. Been using it for 50 years. Be sure to spit on the line before pulling it tight.
Wayne SW/MO Posted August 26, 2013 Posted August 26, 2013 I used the improved cinch for many decades, but I like the palomar for a tight knot and the Rapala for a loop. Both of these are very strong and will work with mono, flouro, or braid. Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.
Dutch Posted August 26, 2013 Posted August 26, 2013 I have switched to the Pitzen knot for all applications. It works on mono, braid and fluro. I can even tie it with gloves on in the winter.
Feathers and Fins Posted August 26, 2013 Posted August 26, 2013 Improved, Palomar and Rapala here as well. https://www.facebook.com/pages/Beaver-Lake-Arkansas-Fishing-Report/745541178798856
moguy1973 Posted August 26, 2013 Posted August 26, 2013 I solely tie the Palomar now after years of the Improved Clinch failing me. I have yet to have a Palomar come loose on me. If I ever switch to fluorocarbon I'll probably use the Uni knot for that, but it's strictly Palomar for me until that time. It's so easy and quick to tie there's no reason to use any of those twisting knots, and it works. -- JimIf people concentrated on the really important things in life, there'd be a shortage of fishing poles. -- Doug Larson
Fishslayer88 Posted August 26, 2013 Posted August 26, 2013 I use palomar for my heavier hooks when I'm catfishing, Rapala knot for jerk/swim baits, And just about everything else i use improved clinch. I do like the palomar a lot but i have not tried it on light line and i have never had a priblem with improved clinch so long as I tied it correctly.
RSBreth Posted August 27, 2013 Posted August 27, 2013 Clinch for fluoro and mono - just make sure it's wet before snugging it down. I use snaps so I don't need loop knots AND you can change lures out quickly. It's pretty common for me to throw a couple of deifferent cranks in a good spot before moving on. For Braid I like the double through the hook eye Uni.
Wayne SW/MO Posted August 27, 2013 Posted August 27, 2013 There's a little built in bonus in a palomar knot. They tend to use a little extra line and that gets rid of the abrasion near the lure every time you change. That's one of the reasons I use a leader on braid, that and not cutting or breaking a line that will last for years is the only reason in fact. I don't use a leader on top water as a counter to Sammie grabbing sycamores. You can generally best the tree with 20# braid. Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.
