Ham Posted August 29, 2013 Posted August 29, 2013 I've been very pleasantly surprised by my W&M Rick Clunn crankbait rods. I chose the 7 ft clear water square bill. Not too heavy , throws a ton, and they have worked well for me. I usually try to buy more expensive spinning reels hoping they last longer and that they are smooth during the retrieve. I fish an old school grub a lot. It helps to have a smooth reel for that and a good drag. I back reel on large fish, but I still like having a good drag system. Guest Posted August 29, 2013 Posted August 29, 2013 I'm all about a smooth reel and drag system. What sets GLoomis apart from other rods? Name? $400 is a lot of money
Mitch f Posted August 29, 2013 Posted August 29, 2013 You definitely reach the point of diminishing returns with rods anymore. The $400 rods of old can be purchased on sale of $150 or less today, possibly under $100. Yes, if you have the money and you use it often, it might be worth it to you. That last 5-10% of what makes a rod better will cost you out the nose...is it worth it? "Honor is a man's gift to himself" Rob Roy McGregor
RSBreth Posted August 29, 2013 Posted August 29, 2013 I'd do the 50/50 since you want a very smooth retrieve for the Ned Rig. I don't buy very expensive rods or reels anymore - they all seem to lose value and i get new stuff every few years anyway and the 75 to 100-dollar stuff is better than the 200 dollar stuff of just a few years ago.
Guest Posted August 29, 2013 Posted August 29, 2013 The spinning rod combo is going to be a surprise gift for my wife. She picked up my Falcon Lowrider/Sahara combo and has been talking it up.
Ham Posted August 29, 2013 Posted August 29, 2013 IF she's happy with the Falcon, by all means buy her another Falcon. You MIGHT want to step up to a Cara, but Lowriders are pretty nice. I'm sure the G.Loomis rods are very nice. I'm not at all sure they would be twice as nice as a rod half their price. Every Saint has a past, every Sinner has a future. On Instagram @hamneedstofish
Feathers and Fins Posted August 29, 2013 Posted August 29, 2013 St Croix rods all the way. Reel either Shimano Stradic or Sahara and your set. All I run is Stcroix rods and shimano reels its the one area i have no problem splurging for the higher end stuff as it really does make a difference. https://www.facebook.com/pages/Beaver-Lake-Arkansas-Fishing-Report/745541178798856

Its the best one that ive ever owned. I might give the St.Croix a try. What model for shaky heads?
Feathers and Fins Posted August 29, 2013 Posted August 29, 2013 Thats a hard question to answer, I use a PS76MLF for almost everything spinning up to 10 lb line and love 7'6 rods with a passion. That said you really need to go play with a bunch of St Croix's and find which one you like best. So many choices it makes me want to buy them all. I have never had a more comfortable rod then st croix salt or freshwater. https://www.facebook.com/pages/Beaver-Lake-Arkansas-Fishing-Report/745541178798856
Gavin Posted August 29, 2013 Posted August 29, 2013 I'd buy a top quality blank and wrap it or have it wrapped....add a Plfueger Reel.
