abkeenan Posted September 25, 2013 Author Posted September 25, 2013 It seems we have a few things in common! I like jerk baits and hate the Jayhawks too!! Go to your favorite tackle shop or a BPS and ask for a reel to put on a few deep cranking rods. Try them all and look for one that is light, parabolic and has good balance with the reel. I'm finding the older I get I like lighter gear, especially if I am going to throw it all day long. My current DC rod is the Falcon Cara Deep Cranker. Its a great rod and has all the attributes listed above. I also have a couple of older crankin sticks that are ok. IMHO the mojo, Clunn and Skeet rods are to heavy and big and bulky looking. Good luck and let us know what you end up getting. That is always good info but two problems with going to my BPS here in St. Louis is that 1) they usually have a poor selection of rods in the models. Sure they have a ton of their BPS house brand models and some of the more popular rods like Abu Garcia Veritas and some Shimano models but the St. Croix, Duckett, Falcon and others are slim pickin's and you have to pray that they have the length and action you are wanting in store or else you SOL. I've had to special order 2 rods from them and go pick them up because they didn't have the Compre or BuCoo I wanted. 2) I have a Lews reel that I will be cranking with and if I carry that in with me to a BPS store in hopes of putting it on a rod to and see how it feels I heard Johnny Morris installed a security measure that if you walk into any of his stores with a Lews reel you are struck with a lighning bolt and die instantaneously.

Currently using a 7' abu veritas winch, which is really light, but balances good with the lews reel. Also has a nice soft tip to keep them hooked up. I use a 7' BPS medium action cranking stick for smaller baits, and like it, but it is heaver. Good luck making the right decision. Born to Fish. Forced to Work.
Champ188 Posted September 25, 2013 Posted September 25, 2013 abk, do they not have a Cabela's in STL? The one down here carries a great selection of rods ... Duckett, St. Croix, Shimano, ... etc.
BassMaster#1 Posted September 26, 2013 Posted September 26, 2013 I'm pretty sure the BPS in STL has the Shimano and Cranking stick in stock. They don't have the winches in stock and the Ducket's are hit or miss. I would just call BPS or Cabelas beforehand. That way you can at least get one of these rods in your hand before you make your decision. The Mojo and Rick Clunns are heavier rods, but they are true Glass compared to the others. My cranking stick is the 7'6" Compre and it works great. I also have a 7' 3 Duckett rod that I absolute love. If you can hold off you may wait till black friday when Tackle warehouse will have %20 off. Good luck
RSBreth Posted September 26, 2013 Posted September 26, 2013 I like the BPS Crankin' Stick but HATE the handle so I sand the hump off. Otherwise they're a great buy.
Members timr0123 Posted September 26, 2013 Members Posted September 26, 2013 I have the 7' 8" Mojo "Big Crankster" best deep cranking rod I've ever owned. abk, I too have the Mojo Big Cranker as well as all of the regular Mojo cranking rods. I also have all the BPS Cranking Sticks. Both brands are exceptional. I have Revo winch's and Premier's attached to all but two of them, with the others being Lew's Tournament Pros. They make for a well balanced set up. The man difference between the two brands is the style of handles. The full corked hump handle of the BPS is fairly comfortable, especially if you have larger hands. I can cast deep, medium and square bills on both brands all day with minor fatigue. I do prefer the Mojo's over the BPS for slinging big cranks, as in 6x and 10x Strike Kings and DD22's. The split grip handle gives you more leverage when casting. The Mojo's also have a bit more sensitivity, which is important if you are banging your cranks along the bottom. I have bought my Mojo's online from Tackle Warehouse and Gander Mountain when either has had sales. Both offer free shipping and I do not have to pay tax due to neither having a store in Missouri. You are more than welcome to try mine anytime you'd like.
abkeenan Posted September 26, 2013 Author Posted September 26, 2013 Thanks for all the help guys. This is what makes this site so great, everyone so willing to help. Lots of guys complain about getting tired or sore throughout the day when deep cranking and a heavy rod bothers them. I still consider myself young at 32 and never have issues where an ounce here or there in a rod or reel bothers me. I may change my tune in 10 years but by that time I will be getting all new gear anyways! Looks like I just need to get both the Mojo Glass in my hands and the Crankin Stick as well and see what feels best. Thanks again guys and keep the info coming.
Members ranger185 Posted September 26, 2013 Members Posted September 26, 2013 I've been through a bunch of crankbait rods over the last 25 years or so...I remember having the old lews and browning silaflex. Been through several loomis cbr's also. And those are some great rods but i like the big crankster as well as any i've ever had. It's heavier than a graphite rod for sure but the retrieve is smooth as silk and it handles fish at the boat well.. I throw DD22's 6 xd's and the norman nxs on it mostly.

Duckett, St. Croix, Shimano, ... etc. They do but I am not a fan. It is sloppily ran. Have been there 2 times and it looks like they let a bunch of 5 year old kids run around and take stuff off the racks and then put it back all over the place. Something about that bothers me. I dunno why maybe just because I am a neat and orderly person and know EXACTLY where I put my things. I can tell you where any lure is in my boxes and that is in because I am just that type of person. BPS is so well organized and maintained that I appreciate it when I go in there.
