joeD Posted October 8, 2013 Posted October 8, 2013 Will those white jigs catch fish when there are 5 or 6 or 8 generators running? This mother f***** will. Put that white jig to shame. Go ahead and catch those 12" rainbow stockers.
Ham Posted October 8, 2013 Author Posted October 8, 2013 Yes, the jig will catch fish with 5 running or 6 or 8. Not my favorite time to fish though. I carry jerkbaits and throw them from time to time. I've caught big trout on them too. I've also caught the 12 stockers you dismiss. I don't think they stock 12 inch fish BTW. Stockers are usually going to be < 10 inches I really don't like the damage those jerkbait do to the fish. I prefer one hook point to nine. I do own multiple McStiks in that LSU color. hoglaw Posted October 8, 2013 Posted October 8, 2013 I'm a big jerkbait fan. They do inflict some damage from time to time. I de-barb all of my hooks so I figure that helps somewhat. My fiancee really likes the Rapala XR-8 in the rainbow trout color. She's big on feathered trebles. I picked up some McSticks recently, but my favorite is a Lucky Craft DD-78 Pointer. I haven't gotten a good opportunity to throw them on big water yet. I've caught some good fish on white jigs in heavier flows before. We always fished jigs on the little red so they're just a comfort bait for me. My biggest trout have been caught on jigs so far, but hopefully I'll get a good heavy water jerkbait weekend this winter. One of my favorite jig holes ever is the hole just below the island at McClellan's on the Norfork. I used to love sitting on the log just down from that hole over the deeper water and throwing a white jig. It was brown after brown there.
ollie Posted October 9, 2013 Posted October 9, 2013 I'll stick to the ones I tie myself. One day I will get over that way Ham and WILL take you up on fishing the White! "you can always beat the keeper, but you can never beat the post" There are only three things in life that are certain : death, taxes, and the wind blowing at Capps Creek!
Ham Posted October 9, 2013 Author Posted October 9, 2013 Sounds Great Ollie. The Norfork seems to always be In a state of flux. More stream alteration work being done upstream and I'm curious how long in will take for thing to get back to normal after the road work in Norfork. I really want to get some yak trips in on the Norfork while it was minimum flow running. That will likely be a flyrod trip. I tote jerkbaits. I throw jerkbaits. Most of mine sport barbless Gammies that I got at Reds Tackle in Lakeview. Every Saint has a past, every Sinner has a future. On Instagram @hamneedstofish
BFTMASTER Posted October 9, 2013 Posted October 9, 2013 I have good luck with the marabou jigs that I order from Lilley's. Favorite colors are orange/brown, scuplin/olive, white. I don't know about you guys but I flatten my barbs on my jigs and feel like I get many more hook-ups and less misses. I use Falcon Original 6'6" light action for my jigs with a Shimano Stratic 1000 and Seaguar 4lb. Flourocarbon Maybe I should try out the nanofil
Ham Posted October 9, 2013 Author Posted October 9, 2013 I love the Nanofil. I think it is a very good product, BUT I think I still need a rod with mono or copoly. There are times that I have noticed a better hook up rate with my P line than the nanofil. I suspect that I snatch it away from them before it gets all the way in their mouth. I do not at all like braid on a rod that I use for grub fishing I'll have three jig rods in the boat with me in the future. One will have P Line, one with have Nanofil, and one with have Power Pro 10/2 braid. Every Saint has a past, every Sinner has a future. On Instagram @hamneedstofish
Ham Posted October 11, 2013 Author Posted October 11, 2013 Nooooooo Hoglaw. It's just another method that I desire the give in the mono or copoly to allow the fish to get the bait fully into their mouth. I can see where my comment lead you to think that's what I meant. I fished the White again yesterday afternoon after another BSL crappie trip. I launched at 4 PM and pulled the boat out at 630PM. I got 50 fish to hand. Missed a washtub full of other bites and lost dozens of fish that I had hooked. Again, I did better on mono than the nanofil WHEN the wind allowed for it. I just react too quickly some times. Part of the problem is that the rod with nanofil is a little too fast for trout. I pull the bait away from the fish. Again, I have plans for another OMT which will have 6 lb Nanofil. If you haven't tried them yet you should try the Lucky Craft Spazz. It's a little more slender than a 78 pointer but it's also a little longer and runs a little shallower with a very wide, slashing action. I bought one before our last trip to the White and that one bait was the only one the browns would touch. It only has 2 trebles also so that much less to worry about tearing the fish up.
