If you work for a bloated cow, and you KNOW you work for a bloated cow, you shouldn't be surprised when it comes time for that bloated cow to be sent to the butcher. My hats off to the hard-working govt employees that are out there, but they are the exception, and not the rule.

It was a slap in the face to the laid off workers to be called Non-Essential. In reality, the only essential workers still getting checks are the ones that protect the life and health of the American Citizens, for the most part Law Enforcement. Can't have a bunch of disgruntled law enforcement in case the SHTF.

They could have used another term other than Non-Essential. No need to belittle average Joe's just out trying to make an honest living.

I personally would call Congress, President, and all of their staff, Non Essential. They have been good for nothing for the past 5 years or longer.

No argument there pardner. Cut their pay first and their benefits as in right now.

Gee thanks. I got a Fed job 5 years ago, after trying for many years after getting out of the Navy (And working 19 years in the private sector). Now, I know I'm just one of those nameless, faceless, darn Federal workers, but I take a tremendous amount of pride in my job and I'm now doing it without pay. Still required to go to work, but no check until the shutdown ends.

Comments like yours annoy the living crap out of me.

I must say that if my employer couldn't balance his books, ran a deficit year after year, and continually requested an increased line of credit just to pay me, I would update my resume.

Don't take this as an insult as I don't know you and I have all the faith in the world that you are a hard worker and do great work at whatever you do. If I met you personally I would be the first to thank you for it, respect you and your hard work and pride and we would probably be fishing buddies. That said, it is not MY money you take home each paycheck... no it is worse than that. It is BORROWED money. I merely pay back the interest on it out of each of my paychecks. Food off of MY TABLE. I'm curious why anyone would try for many years to get a job for someone 16 TRILLION DOLLARS in debt. And you are surprised you miss a paycheck?

Wow, so you are thanking him for taking food off your table, a little confusing, and it doesn't seem like you respect him to me.

No more resume updates for me, I've done enough of the changing careers thing. My coworkers and I pay taxes out of our checks as well, so the foods off our tables too.

Why I tried (and FINALLY succeeded) to get this job? It's what I've always wanted to do. I think the job we(myself and the folks I work with) do is important, and I feel like I've done something worthwhile when I go home at night. And my prior military service counts for something again, mainly 7 years toward retirement someday (yeah right...). Call me selfish...

To satisfy anyone's curiosity who wants to know, I work for the FAA at an airport in SW MO.

I completely agree with most of you about the complete failure of our "leaders", but I don't agree with the generalizations of federal employees being overpaid, underworked sponges on the economy. Not in this agency anyway.

Congrats on the puppy Ness.

I'll go with 11-5, Denver being 2 of the 5.
