Wayne SW/MO Posted October 4, 2013 Posted October 4, 2013 The biggest problem with federal employees is the same thing as with union shops only worse. You have a group that over achieves, a bigger group that does their job as intended, and then a group that works at their own pace with no concern for productivity. In a union shop it's hard to fire any in that group, but in a federal job it's impossible. It's also hard to know how many other workers they drag down with them. I was there for awhile and the majority did their job, but it was disheartening to watch some get the same pay for very little. Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.
Haris122 Posted October 4, 2013 Posted October 4, 2013 It's SOOO easy to bash anybody who you think just CAN'T be as hard a worker, or as smart, or as worth what they're making, as you are, especially if you also think they're making more than you are. I didn't really see much of a point in commenting on this since it's entirely out of my hands (can't even vote), but +1 to that.

I will agree with that, I never understood why it is so hard to be fired from a federal job, it is a good place to coast along if you have no desire for advancement. I have worked for several state agencies and have been amazed at how little I had to do to equal the work of the person I replaced. ScottK Posted October 4, 2013 Posted October 4, 2013 For the record, anytime anybody gets laid off, they are essentially, not-essential. It doesn't matter if their employer is a private company or the Federal Government. And anytime anyone gets laid off, it is a slap in the face. Federal workers are not unique in either of those areas. It is not disrespectful to question anyone's career choices. Hard work and dedication are admirable, but it does matter what you are dedicating yourself to and working for. If a small airport in SW Missouri doesn't have much air traffic, doesn't really need a control tower, ends up closing, and an FAA agent gets laid off, am I supposed to feel badly for him or her? Is it disrespectful for me to say they should have seen it coming? I value hard work, but shouldn't a federal employee be thanking ME? I'm the one paying their salary. Our senators work for me. I pay them and I am the boss of them. The firing process needs to be streamlined, but that is the fact. Any furloughed federal employee reading this who is concerned and actively looking for a new employer and is truly facing a tough time financially (this means you have cancelled your smart phone, hundreds of cable channels, and all your flat screen TV's, boat and spare truck are all on Craigslist) contact me and we'll talk about how soon you can start at my company. I'm always looking for people like you. Hard work does pay off. If you don't believe that you should go and try it some time. My boat is not on Craigslist yet, but it's on here. It was for sale before the shutdown happened though. Maybe you're in the market for a used Tahoe? My car's on Craigslist. And THANK YOU so much for paying my salary. I know you have options when it comes to who you want to "give" your hard earned money to, and we appreciate you choosing us. Seriously, I agree with some of you. I do however feel the need to defend this job, and the way we in this office/district do it. Hard work pays off? Huh, never thought of that. Maybe you should come down and go to work with us sometime. Bring your steel toe boots, hard hat, electrical PPE, and climbing gear. See you at 0600.
Feathers and Fins Posted October 4, 2013 Posted October 4, 2013 Times have changed, people are able to see via social media now just how ridiculous the federal government is and that is reflecting in the numerous survey/polls. The impossibility of terminating federal employee's, the ridiculous benefits they get even if they resign or quit, them not having to answer questions. No other job could you have it so good and its all at OUR expense. Now they are seeing this political game and if it was so infuriating to the people we would have to laugh. I was listening to some radio program yesterday morning and the host was predicting how this shut down would go he said there wasn't much to grab people attentions as the shutdown started in the middle of a week so new had to be made fast and thus the closing of the Parks to grab headlines. Next week he said you will see media covering Wic <sp> loosing funding and poor babies not getting food or housing money etc. Then after that you will see interviews with people being laid off because their jobs relied on the federal government. He went down a check list and said that is the game plan for this to start each week showing how the government being shut down is harming people. Then he went on about how this percent of employs are furloughed and this percentage here and ended with if these are non-essential basically unneeded to operate why do we have them? He listed off the pay they made and how much it could save us. My BP Was getting pretty high listening to him because it was true. https://www.facebook.com/pages/Beaver-Lake-Arkansas-Fishing-Report/745541178798856

1969Larson Posted October 4, 2013 Posted October 4, 2013 I don't think anyone is "bashing" federally-paid workers. Just making observations... Most of which have been pretty accurate. I hate to ask the tough questions, but in case you haven't noticed, WE ARE BROKE!!! Worse than broke. Regardless of how hard you work or what time you get up or whatever, the money spent on these programs, essential or not, is borrowed. I have compassion. I feel for you, but emotions aside, this is a real big problem and we can't go on the same way. The worst part is this isn't new. Who didn't see this coming? But let's just stay focused on the important issues like marijuana and gay marriage.
