jdmidwest Posted November 12, 2013 Posted November 12, 2013 Was sitting in the blind yesterday munching on some duck jerky I whipped up Friday night before I left out and was wondering what everyone does for duck blind food. Even with all of the exercise we have chasing cripples, we seem to put on a little weight during the season. We hunt a variety of places during the season ranging from temporary blinds, boats, and permanent blinds. I usually keep a cookset in the truck with a single burner stove, paper plates, utensils, coffee pot, and spices. I toss it in the boat and carry it to a blind from time to time. We have even packed it into a field temporary blind on occaision. A hot meal really helps on a cold damp day. Pre cooked sausage links and scrambled eggs have been good breakfast food this season. Or bacon and eggs. For lunch, I have done red beans and rice with sausage that I precooked at home, heated chili, or fried venison steaks. For a cold lunch, we have the Bumble Bee prepared tuna salad and crackers, Jalapeno Vienna Sausage, Spam and Crackers, or lunch meat sandwiches. Snacks have been the Jerky or Summer Sausage of some outdoor critter, dried pineapple, pretzels, trail mix, etc. "Life has become immeasurably better since I have been forced to stop taking it seriously." — Hunter S. luckycraft Posted November 12, 2013 Posted November 12, 2013 Thats some fine Dining to what I am used to. Usually whatever is available at the gas station, and of course Coffee to get the ducks to come in
duckydoty Posted November 12, 2013 Posted November 12, 2013 Ive been know to bring the portable grill and do brats on cold days. Nothing better than a hot brat when its 20 degrees out. A Little Rain Won't Hurt Them Fish.....They're Already Wet!! Visit my website at.. Ozark Trout Runners
Feathers and Fins Posted November 12, 2013 Posted November 12, 2013 Gas station food on occasion But mostly its stuff prepared the night before for snacks. On occasion the portable stove does come out and its hot food in the blind just depends on the day and location. Hard to bring in all the hardware to Timber holes. https://www.facebook.com/pages/Beaver-Lake-Arkansas-Fishing-Report/745541178798856
BilletHead Posted November 12, 2013 Posted November 12, 2013 Boy you guys go all out. Actually I loose weight doing this. Normally I am close to home and have short hunts on local ponds and fields. I almost never get hungry when I am busy so I just do without . Big bowl of cereal and coffee before the hunt either on the road or at home. Then when done one big afternoon meal when it is the Mrs. and I. I am getting where I don't do late big Evening meals too well. (acid reflux when too spicy or too much) When I am solo a small noon meal after the hunt then a small Evening meal when the Mrs. gets home after work. Mrs. did say this weekend wouldn't it be neat to have a boat or big blind and cook breakfast, make coffee, etc. I weighed 189 last week and after messing around four days I am now 184. And no it isn't that I am full of crap. The guy that I met and went with yesterday opened his blind bag and it looked like he had just been out knocking on doors for Halloween plus a fist full of honey buns. He munched during the hunt. jdmidwest Posted November 12, 2013 Author Posted November 12, 2013 Most of the time there is lots of time between birds. Most locations are a 2 hour drive for me, so I usually don't get hunger pains till shooting time. I have always packed a stove and coffee pot. Just a little more for a skillet, ladle, etc. My buddies son packed it a quarter mile last season for a hot breakfast at Otter Slough in the snow. Gave us energy to keep waterhole open that day. mic Posted November 12, 2013 Posted November 12, 2013 Just one question... Does a duck hunter go crap in the woods or reeds?
BilletHead Posted November 12, 2013 Posted November 12, 2013 Just like any other animal except We don't sniff where we want to go. At least I don't. Can't really speak for some of these other critters on here that hunt, BilletHead "We have met the enemy and it is us", Pogo If you compete with your fellow anglers, you become their competitor, If you help them you become their friend" Lefty Kreh " Never display your knowledge, you only share it" Lefty Kreh "Eat more bass and there will be more room for walleye to grow!" BilletHead Very Jealous right now, I walked into a spot, a mile+ in and a mile+ out three days in a row, GAINED 3lbs!!!! I think I gain weight just thinking of food. I've been with my wife for 34 yrs. She's 3lbs heavier than when I met her. She weighed 107 when she was 19 and now is at 110 at 53. She'll get on the scale at home and say she's lost a couple of lbs. Don't worry dear, I think I found them! Sorry for my little rant! BTW it was a good weekend. Mallards only 4 Friday, 4 Saturday & 3 Sunday. no other ducks in the air. I think I only missed one duck that I shot at and was out of the area in less than 2 hrs each day. Believe me, its not normally like that for me. its usually 2 ducks per box of shells and there until 1pm. Must be the extra weight I put on, it steadied my aim! @lozcrappie
