Smalliebigs Posted December 17, 2013 Posted December 17, 2013 The only thing I've never understood is that we, the Ozarks, are stuck in the middle between the huge smallmouth of the Tennessee river chain, and the huge Northern strain. Granted we don't have the longer growing season as the southern fish, but come on, we should have a longer growing season than the Northern ones. But I know the answer is these fish are "perfect" for this habitat. But I sure as heck would love to sneak some other strains in our rivers! HAhahahahah....totally agree Mitch.....I wish someone would start stocking some Tennessee river chain Smallies, that would be sweet.
Gavin Posted December 17, 2013 Posted December 17, 2013 Ha! Got a good laugh out of that one Mitch...Thinking that quite a few turn them into turds before they gain any size.
Chief Grey Bear Posted December 17, 2013 Author Posted December 17, 2013 Well, it's like this...some people are anglers, and then there are those like us who are fish geeks. We find all this stuff endlessly fascinating. So let us have our discussions and even friendly arguments about it. Agreed, but now Mr. Biology has resorted to name calling! We are all now just stumps in his back yard!! Chief Grey Bear Posted December 17, 2013 Author Posted December 17, 2013 When you read through the articles I will send first thing tomorrow you will be up to date on all of the relevant research. You can make your own opinions from them, but they all invalidate the "neosho" as a sub species, but do point to them as a unique population within the Micropterus dolomieu species. I will not argue on this forum on this topic any longer as I think I would have a much more receptive audience arguing with the stump in my backyard. So just how much genetically distinction must there be to be considered for sub species level? If Stark himself is stating that non native smallmouth should not be stocked into the waters of the Neosho then I would assume that is about enough distinction. Chief Grey Bear Posted December 17, 2013 Author Posted December 17, 2013 Email sent. I don't think there is a single geneticist who would recommend the mixing of geographically isolated and distinct populations and indiscriminate stocking of non-native species. What? It is blatantly obvious they have.
