Wanting a newer spinning rod soon. Have a cheap 6 1/2 ft med action but wanting a Shimano Clarus. Looking at a 6'8" in med or med hvy. Like throwing 4 inch tubes...craws...chompers....with 10 lbs line. Thinking a med would be too light for my big hook sets but the med hvy too stiff to cast easily. Anybody wanna weigh in on their preferences ?

A medium light rod will do that job and a medium rod will surely has the backbone for it.

Please consider a medium light rod and spool up with 10 pound Nanofil. Awesome setup.

Never used a med light for bass. Would be a good choice for small bait presentation but I tend to go "big" baits and big hook sets.....can't help myself ! All my baitcasters are 6 1/2 to 7 footers and med hvy actions. Have one cheaper spinning rod that's med action and IM 6 gravite......good backbone and not bad on sensitivity but wanna go IM 8 with a Shimano Clarus. Have that rod in bait cast.....awesome !!! Like a fast tip but don't want so much bending 2/3rds down the blank.

Everybody has their own preferences. I tend to prefer longer rods. Anything under 6'6" feels short to me.

I've heard good things about those Shimano rods. Good luck with your selection. I truly feel like MH would be overkill and would be harder to cast with, but to each his own.

I agree ham. Feels like you're flicking the bait with a short rod. Prefer 6 1/2 ft plus myself.

Forgot to add......for the money the shimanos are awesome rods. Their IM8 blanks are super sensitive. Still have one from the mid 80's when BPS was "small". Still use it and pray nothing happens to it.....its like an old friend. Wanna replace it with a River Fork this spring....put it up for prosperity.

I have a 7ft Medium Falcon Cara T7 Clark Wendlandt edition (just a Cara with EVA grips) and it is awesome. They had them on sale a year ago for 99.99 at Tackle Warehouse and that was too good of a deal to pass up. It is PERFECT for any type of finesse type presentations, sensitive and has the perfect bend/action on it. Plenty of backbone too. I myself wouldn't go anything lighter than a medium but that is just my opinion.

Just remember that general descriptions of rods, (M, MH, ML), are just that, very general. Each and every manufacturer has their own idea of what description is used for which blank.

On many types of bites and situations on Table Rock, I like having the advantage of being able to make very long casts. A longer, "medium" action rod allows that on most baits.

On heavy baits like the A-rig, I use an older 7-1/2' Shimano Flipping Stick with old Ambassador 5500. Very good set up, casts like a dream.

Just my 2 cents.

This is VERY good info and why you should get your hands a rod brand or series of particular rods before you buy because one companies medium heavy is like another companies medium. Falcons are typically a softer than their marked action performs. Abu Garcia is the reverse where their MH in the Veritas for example is more like a Heavy in a Falcon lineup. St. Croix, Duckett, Shimano, BPS brands....they will all vary and you need to test them out to see which one is best for your needs.
