abkeenan Posted December 22, 2013 Posted December 22, 2013 I make no distinction between what is winding, dragging, cranking or a dozen or so other applications they claim (for sales purposes) you need. Heavy or light application and how well its constructed is all. I want is it to feel comfortable in my hands. I will throw whatever I want on the rod. Feel is a developed skill for the most part. If it was not you could not tell the difference between bumping a rock and a hit. I will respectfully disagree on this. You are going to feel more bites with a Cara than you are with an Ugly Stick. I don't care how adept you are with a rod you have had for 20 years. A rod transmitting more vibrations into your hands and fingers is going to put more fish in the boat. Just like any wrench, drill, screwdriver, bolt, etc. in your garage, they are made for certain applications and a rod is no different. They are tools in your boat and some rods are better at one situation than another. My 2 cents.
Old plug Posted December 22, 2013 Posted December 22, 2013 Your welcome to disagree with me. But you will never convince me.
Champ188 Posted December 23, 2013 Posted December 23, 2013 I'm not here to argue with anyone, but abk is right ... if you put a Cara in your hands spooled with 15-pound Trilene 100% fluorocarbon and drag it across a pea gravel bottom, then do the same with a lower-modulus graphite rod spooled with 15-pound Big Game mono, you will get far better feel of what's going on with the higher-tech Cara. It's simple physics ... higher-modulus graphite and 100 percent fluorocarbon line both help transmit vibration better than lesser-quality materials. No one has to believe it any more than they have to believe that God created the universe and everything in it. Still doesn't change the fact that it's true.
hknfsh Posted December 23, 2013 Author Posted December 23, 2013 I will have to back you up Champ and abkeenan. Have an ugly stick lite that is great for throwing cranks and spinnerbaits what with the mix of gravite/fiberglass. But the same rod to try and fish a bottom bait and detect a slight tick or bump.....forget it ! I do like my shimano clarus in 6'8"" med/hvy.for throwing jigs though....but I am planning on an additional "upgrade" this spring. Never owned a falcon but seems to be a somewhat favored rods for a few on here so I'll definitely check them out !

Don't know your budget but if you are wanting to get a Falcon, not break the bank and get a Falcon entry level rod the Falcon Bucoo is an excellent choice for the price. Sensitive, balanced and have a nice assortment of lengths and actions to chose from. The 7'MH would serve you well for t-rigs and jigs. Have also heard that the 13 Fishing Omen for $100 is also a fantastic rod for the price for what its worth.
Old plug Posted December 23, 2013 Posted December 23, 2013 I am either not here to argue either. I know what i can do and not do. I did not say I have not used or owned one. My first casting rod was 5 ft long and made of pure steel. There is a lot more to it than feeling the tick or bump. The thing I was trying to put across is you do not need a rod for each and every type lure you use or application. champ......... I do not have a casting outfit with 15 lb test on it. I do not need anything that heavy on LOZ. I do have one small 5 1/2 ft casting rod though with 10 lb test on that I fish for large fish with.
Ham Posted December 23, 2013 Posted December 23, 2013 i have an Uncle that is a VERY good fisherman. He uses CRAP equipment. I often wonder how many more fish he would have caught or how much better he could have been with good gear. I'm not talking abouit the most expensive stuff going, but just "good" gear. Old Plug sounds like you do very well for yourself. I wouldn't change a thing either. Not everyone would do near so well as you using your gear, but you're dialed in with it. It's all good. hknfsh Posted December 24, 2013 Author Posted December 24, 2013 Oops.....abkeenan....was trying to reply to your comment.....messed it up ! I just got back from bps and was looking at the falcon bucoo rod. I must be old school but how does one tell the sensitivity of such rod when there is no notation on it ? I'm used to seeing an IM rating on rods....or is that only on cheaper ones ? Did like that falcon though....
Old plug Posted December 24, 2013 Posted December 24, 2013 Turn the rod upside own and push the tip against the floor at a45 degree angle You can see the bend in the rod a fast tip will bed mostly from the tip and medium action will bend pretty far down the rod. The power you can judge at that time by the amount of force you need to apply to get the bend. You might want to try this on several rods in the rack. I will help you understand.
