Fishrman Posted January 7, 2014 Posted January 7, 2014 Fished a tourney on Taneycomo one January, 14* at take off ice freezing on the ramp as you pull out and freezing before next boat got in the water. Absolutely hurt me to fish that day. Never done it again. I will say, best day on the Rock I have ever had was 35* cloudy and windy with snow spitting. Caught a lot on jerkbait that day and many were over 3 lbs. I actually crave those days on the Rock in early spring. Today however, just too dangerous to be out there. I wouldn't even be deer hunting in these temps.
*T* Posted January 7, 2014 Posted January 7, 2014 Lake of the Ozarks, March, 2010, 34º with freezing rain & sleet accunulating on boat & on me and partner, plus a constant 20-25 mph wind. Ended up weighing 3 or 4. Can't really remember. Brain froze up that day. Would prefer minimum 45-50 &some sun. "Water is the driving force of all Nature." -Leonardo da Vinci
Wayne SW/MO Posted January 7, 2014 Posted January 7, 2014 I've fished upper Taney when it was in the 20's a few times. it does help to have a truck and heater close by however. Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.
Fishin Hodge Posted January 7, 2014 Author Posted January 7, 2014 I've started several fishing trips in the low teens, but never fished a day that didn't get into the upper 20's myself, and that was really more than I wanted. Looks like we are all of the same opinion. I still wonder if there wasn't one idiot out there with the lake all to himself though. The thing about yesterday that I hadn't given much thought to until a buddy mentioned it was, if you fell in, you would have a decent chance to die.

Yeah the increased probability of death is one of the many reasons I don't fish when the temp never gets above 10 degrees.

inshore Posted January 7, 2014 Posted January 7, 2014 If anyone went I hope he had the best fishing day he ever had. we will probably find him dead from hypothermia frozen to his steering wheel.
jolicious Posted January 7, 2014 Posted January 7, 2014 Ahhh...Tackle Warehouse season. You betcha! And they're still biting (or I am biting) - Supposed to get another round of plasctics in Friday LOL.
dtrs5kprs Posted January 8, 2014 Posted January 8, 2014 You betcha! And they're still biting (or I am biting) - Supposed to get another round of plasctics in Friday LOL. Re-configuring the fish room now. Should post pics as a warning to others to stay off tackle websites.
fly2fish Posted January 8, 2014 Posted January 8, 2014 I have wade fished at night below the dam when it was 17, 19 and 22 deg. and the least number of fish caught was 13. Shortest night was 45 minutes and longest 1:15 got tired of fighting the frozen line. The key is dip your rod right before casting and strip just fast enough so the line does not freeze to your guides but not to fast or you will pull in to much water and get your gloves wet and then they freeze and get stiff. Never got that cold because the water is still upper 40's to around 50 deg. I wear thin cotton or nylon gloves with thin rubber gloves over them to keep hands dry and wool or waterproof gloves over them for warmth. A couple years ago before the felt sole ban I was walking back from Big Hole and they keep freezing to the sidewalk had to walk on the grass. F2F.
