I didn't realize a trout park was a big secret especially when you can walk around and see the fish swimming around right in front of you. If this was something on main stretch of river, I'd never mention anything about it. So much for being generous and giving out advice so somebody can go catch a few smallies without having to mess with a boat.

You aren't supposed to keep any fish from the spring branch during c&r season anyways right or is that just for trout?

The trout park isn't the secret. The smallmouth there might not have been either, but it sure didn't need advertising about the great fishing.

Well I apologize for not being a stingy butt about catching smallmouth from a freakin trout park. I don't fish down there much anyways so it doesn't really bother me. I've got other spots I can fish too that require a jet boat and knowledge of the area that I will keep hush hush on.

Guys come on here looking for free info but aren't wiling to share any in return. Gotta love it! Fishermen at their best!

I don't care if you tell everybody or not, that is your choice. But you go one week and nobody is there and you catch a bunch of fish, put it out on the internet, then don't be surprised when you go back and people are everywhere. It happens.

Geez relax Francis. Some people come on here looking for all this info with no intentions of ever sharing any of their knowledge, they just want yours. Does that suck? Yes. Is it horrible that we can't tell of all of our fishing adventures and help each other out? Yes. But that's the way it works these days.

Seth, it is no big secret at all......don't worry about the crap you were just given. Didn't you know when you post here it can't have a location or date or even what lures you were using??? :have-a-nice-day: There are NO secret fishing spots in Missouri, just some that don't get hammered as much as others. The catch and keep crowd will be eating fish in very remote places all over this state no matter what you post here. Posting here you must use oxy morons, hahahaha. I can't wait for some warmer weather.

I understand completely. There's plenty that I don't post in the open forum as well. This is just one of those things that I don't mind mentioning since I don't fish it much personally and I like seeing others who are limited to bank fishing get in on the action. The water will recede and the jet boaters will be gone. I'd bet money those jet boaters already know about the smallmouth in that area. I don't even know where a guy puts in at to get up there. I'm not a Meramec guy.

Oh I'm not losing sleep over it. I have my own spots/lures/blahblahblah that I don't mention as well but this isn't one of them. This is just about catching fish and having some fun. Most of thee fish are dinks anyways so you couldn't keep them even if you wanted to. If I was taking this stuff serious, I would have been equipped with something other than a sissy stick and 4# test when I went. :secret-laugh:

This. No it's not a secret, but I'm sure someone fishes it a lot and figured out there were smallmouth there. Now that little tidbit they found is getting advertised by someone who doesn't fish an area particularly often.

Seth, here's the thing...

There are X number of people that are going to head down to Maramec Spring Park to fish for trout during the winter season. They don't know about smallmouth and don't care. There are Y number of people who know about the smallmouth in the park and are interested in fishing for them (and Y is a lot smaller number than X). There are Z number of people who know about the smallmouth at the mouth of the spring branch and have jetboats and will fish for them whenever they can get a jetboat up there.

But by publicizing it on here, and touting that you can catch a bunch of smallies, you've just introduced a number of people to it over and above X+Y+Z. People who are interested in catching smallies but didn't realize that there are a bunch of them within the park.

Now it's far from a secret that the smallies are there in the winter, as they are around most springs of any size. But the fish are concentrated like they will never be anywhere else, and the more pressure they get, the more likely that some of them will be killed even by catch and release anglers. And more selfishly, perhaps, the more crowded it will be in and around the park.

Bottom line is, everybody knows Maramec Spring Park is full of trout. Not everybody knows it also has smallmouth. To most, it's perfectly okay to post how good or bad the trout fishing is, but not okay to publicize something that perhaps relatively few people know about. And stop and think a bit about your outlook that you don't fish there much so you don't mind publicizing it. If I found one of your pet spots, where I don't plan to fish much, and tout how good it is, wouldn't that upset you just a little when you found it full of people the next time you went to fish it?
