Jerry Rapp Posted January 18, 2014 Posted January 18, 2014 we had a pond back in my "informative years". 1965 to 1972 or so. A Hula Popper caught a lot of bass, over and over out of that pond, many others at Wappapello, Bismark Lake, etc. I might break it back out just to see what happens.
Members Greg W Posted January 19, 2014 Members Posted January 19, 2014 Hula popper was the first artificial bait that I learned ho w to use. That was years ago
J-Doc Posted January 19, 2014 Posted January 19, 2014 I have a curse with Hula Poppers. Every one I've ever thrown was lost in some fashion. Popped line on a cast, snagged, etc. I gave up. I should give it another try. LOVE the sound they make (blOOp) Need marine repair? Send our own forum friend "fishinwrench" a message. He will treat you like family!!! I owe fishinwrench a lot of thanks. He has been a great mechanic with lots of patience!
Quillback Posted January 19, 2014 Posted January 19, 2014 top secret info I have a few old ones in one of my tackle boxes.
Stump bumper Posted January 21, 2014 Author Posted January 21, 2014 No pink flukes? I used too ask these two guys at castmaster weigh ins what they used to get those big bags and they would laugh and say pink flukes, it tool me two years before I realized they were not joking. How about that different looking spoon or maybe the old dare devil spoon with the 5 red diamonds.
Old plug Posted January 21, 2014 Posted January 21, 2014 I am not sure I have a secret weapon. But I would say I have caught most of my large bass on plastic worms no smaller than 101/2 inches and all the way up to 13-14 inch size. Catfish would be spoons for my style.sometimes tipped with a shad. Whites and hybrids a spoon. Crappie.it depends on if you want table crappie or big crappie over 15". Crappie Jigs for table crappie and rogue type baits and bass sized jigs and grubs for the big boys from pre spawn thru the spawn.
Members Greg W Posted January 21, 2014 Members Posted January 21, 2014 Old plug. How do you use spoons for catfish? I have never heard of such?
Old plug Posted January 22, 2014 Posted January 22, 2014 I just jig them off the bottom plain most of the time and now and then with a chunk of bait on it. It is not a unusual practice. I am mostly trying to catch big catfish. When i am doing it. They are a sucker for a spoon especially if they are feeding under schools of white bass. I use light tackle. A 51/5 ft medium action rod with 10 lb test line. If you go light it is a. Good idea to use a heavy leader of mono or wire about 6 " long. If the cat engulfs the whole spoon he. Will chew through 10 lb test pretty easy. I. Lost the Largest one i ever hook because of that. I am. Not a regular catfish person.but when i think i have found some large ones using some area i will go after them with my spoon. I have caught several 20+ the largest was 47 lbs I never keep any either.its allfor the enjoyment of it. Thwt and big gar are a poor mans saltwater fishing.
