Replacement If Trolling Motor Batteries - When

How long does everyone go between replacing their trolling motor batteries? I'm heading into my third season and fish 3 days a week

March- Sept. My boat had interstates in it when I bought it new. Should I replace them or wait until the end of the third season? I can fish all day as it is but the power is starting to slow after 5 hours.

first thought and question is have you checked the water level??? next, have you checked the specific gravity with a hydrometer??? answer those two questions, and then i could give you a better answer about your batteries.

I swap my personal batterys out when they'll no longer hold 12.7v+ overnight, but most of my customers like to try and get ANOTHER YEAR out of them at that point.

If you do alot of fishing then replacing batterys every Spring is cheap insurance. Nothing can ruin a good bite quicker than a sub-standard power source. And lower voltages generates alot of heat in the entire circuit, causing corrosion at every splice and excess heat at the armature brushes. Once the brushes glaze over you've cut your start-up power permanently.....even AFTER you replace the batterys.

I go on how my tmotor is doing. As long as I have lots of power at the end of the day I keep using them. Sometimes it will be 4 years sometimes not. I am running agms that are close to 3 years old and so far they hold all day long. Like wrench stated keeping good batteries is a cheap insurance if you want to keep from ruining a day. I fish 80-100 days per year so my batteries don't cost but a buck or so per trip. That is way cheaper than the $50 in gasoline I usually go through.

Dutch my thoughts exactly. Batteries are cheap compared to the gas and oil. I just didn't want to jump the gun too early.

If you get a chance just run your boat by any of the Battery Outfitter Stores and they will test them for you. If there good they will tell you and if not they will recommend the size and quality you want in your price and performance range.
