Moswimb8slinger Posted January 24, 2014 Posted January 24, 2014 So far for me with retrieves, slow... just enough to get the bait to swim or suspend with retrieving(slow sinks), and small twitches. I haven't spotted any followers at a distance yet to really make a hard 180 twitch (BBZ1) work although i have practiced it, but most of the time its more of a subtle twitch (or twitch-twitch), but not like a jerkbait retrieve where you'd twitch it after every 3-5 turns of the reel.
Old plug Posted January 24, 2014 Posted January 24, 2014 I have a question about these swimming hard baits like the spro are any other that type. My question is how strong is the resistance you have on lets say a average speed retrieve. If it is about what you would get with a large bill deep running crank bait i could not use it. My shoulder and arms would go numb pretty fast from arthritis in my shoulders.
Jerry Rapp Posted January 24, 2014 Posted January 24, 2014 I just have not gotten enough bites on the crazy thing to keep throwing it. Seems to be way to many other kids in my tackle box that they like much better using the same presentations. I'm going to check out that video Bill, you obviously haven't caught on. You must fish these from the bank, while trolling.
Old plug Posted January 24, 2014 Posted January 24, 2014 Jerry Jerry. Shhhhhhhh.Have known this for many years. Way back when I used to brush down a clearwater with a friend and John Earnie up at Webb Creek we had some stacked for crappie and would put the boat upon the bank about 100 ft from the bed and walk up and fish off the bank. If you tried that around here either the lot owner are some neighbor would call the sheriff on you. And maybe pointing a gun at you in the meantime before the sheriff got there.
Jerry Rapp Posted January 25, 2014 Posted January 25, 2014 yep, Richy must have some of those piles close to the bank. But I would guess those treble hooks would like those piles. Whatever, you can always get another one. I wish I could have met Ernie, he had a lot of knowledge. Just like you.
Moswimb8slinger Posted January 25, 2014 Posted January 25, 2014 The BBZ1 baits have hardly any resistance at all. I mean if your breathe on the line and the bait swims, they swim ok with the line tied directly to the eye, but use a snap(no swivel) with it and they really move with little effort. Get a 7' or 8' medium heavy action rod with a long handle, you make pendulum casts with low effort. A guy in California showed me that with a 10' surf rod...lol Casting swimbaits is a little different from casting small baits, almost like casting livebait, long sweeping cast
Moswimb8slinger Posted January 25, 2014 Posted January 25, 2014 Haven't snagged any baits yet, had a bass break me off due to a bad knot
Old plug Posted January 25, 2014 Posted January 25, 2014 Jerry. Yeah John was a heck of fisherman and a hinter as well. Another guy you might know or heard of down there was Frankie Mc Allister. He was the guy responsible for that giant stringer of bass they use to display on the dock at Piedmont Park. They also carried it to the boat shows in st. Louis and Kansas city. I and another guy I know brought those fish to St louis to the taxidermist for them down there. Frankie was unbelievable. I have never ever seen anyone like him. He had some kind of 3 sense. I can remember talking to him one day on the end of the dock the condition were cloudy. With a light warm rain. I said to him " looks like a good day to get them". He looked out on the lake and around for a minute or so and said " they don''t like that. I said what is wrong with it. he said its " not right they don't like it. Hr was right. The thing about both Frankie and John was they were simple fisherman. Never owned a depth finder never had a expensive rod and reel. To the best of my knowledge nether of them had more than 2 except John owned a 9 ft crappie rod many years before such a thing was ever heard of. There're was only three of those in the world , Johns, my friends and mine. I made all three from a one piece saltwater fly rod blanks. Since those days I have only met one other person that is even close to being attuned to the fish that well. Thats wrench. Have not been to clearwater in at least 25 years.
bluebasser86 Posted January 25, 2014 Posted January 25, 2014 I was also thinking of picking up a slow sink. I want to try for the 6" but for TR that just seems HUGE and might be better off going with the 4". 8" just seems ridiculous unless you are fishing southern lakes or Cali lakes. I know it takes time to get confidence in them but I wouldn't be at all scared of fishing a 6" or 8" bait on Table Rock. None of the lakes I fish in NE Kansas have near the numbers or size of fish as Table Rock and I routinely catch fish on 6-8 inch baits. After you fish them for awhile they don't even seem big anymore. 6" Bull Shad 8" Huddleston And my favorite, the 7" Slammer
Moswimb8slinger Posted January 25, 2014 Posted January 25, 2014 You've got some nice fish there bluebasser
