i finally figured out my whip finish tool !!!!!!!

Good deal, I remember holding mine the first time and wondering what the heck is this for, of course this was before utube. Next step is to eliminate the tool and use your hands, it's not as hard as it seems.

i'd already gone to my hands because i couldn't figure out this tool.just happy i can use it now if i want.it doesn't look like any i've seen in videos.it was free, and i didn't want to buy one.

It is hard to explain it to someone too. Was it the original style or the materelli style finisher?

i don't know but i haven't seen another like it.not that i've seen a bunch but all the others looked very similliar to one another.

After I learned the whip finish tool I felt like I had the confidence to tie anything. Congrats!

Back in the old days when I taught Fly tying with the Missouri Trout Fishermens Association, tying a whip finish using your hands was the first thing taught. I learned to tie and teach it using either the left or right hand. Why waste effort and time picking up a whip finisher when you can use your good hands. Also gives you more confidence in your ability.

A whip finish is actually several half hitches laid on the hook at one time.

If you have any callouses on your hands it's best to keep them off the thread.

it's not any faster for me to do it by hand....and i've got plenty of callouses to.

i found it last night online.it's a thompson style.jdmidwest, i don't know if that's what you mean by original, but it's only good for right behind the hook eye,it's not intended to reach over a bead or farther back like a materelli can.i still wasn't using it right.now that i know how to use it i think i'll like it even better.it makes the whole knot at once, rather than me fumbling with my fingers trying to make several loops(half hitches).
