Goggle-Eyed Posted February 17, 2014 Posted February 17, 2014 I am not sure how long most peoples memory is but I remember the early 80's and Ice was very common across the whole lake. I remember one time at Lake Park when a buddy and I tried to break ice to Crappie fish and it was impossible. I also remember ice skating on a friends pond where the Ice was much thicker than 6". That was an annual thing back in the Late 70's and Early 80's.... I also laugh everytime someone mentions "I've never seen the lake this low"... Really? I hear the same thing every year. Check the Guide Curve check the historical data.... Joe
Goggle-Eyed Posted February 17, 2014 Posted February 17, 2014 Old Plug, you are correct this year has a very high potential for Dock Damage. I worked in the dock industry for over 5 years across the country. From my experience the folks that got the most damage, normally had an Ice Eater that kept there dock open and allowed the shifting ice to shear the floats of their docks. Actually saw one dock up in Iowa that had over 50% of the float bolts sheared off and the floats were just held under the dock by their own bouyancy.
fishinwrench Posted February 17, 2014 Posted February 17, 2014 I also laugh everytime someone mentions "I've never seen the lake this low"... Really? I hear the same thing every year. Check the Guide Curve check the historical data.... It's actually up a bit from last week. It was at 653.7 but now 654 and some change. Lowest in 2013 was 655.7 In 2012 it was drawn down to 654.5 I can't ever remember seeing 652 but there were several years that I snowbirded to Fla. so I might have just missed it.
laker67 Posted February 17, 2014 Posted February 17, 2014 If I remember correctly, it was 47 in 1973. And once prior it was that low or lower. I have seen the dam, in honky tonky cove, above water, twice in my lifetime. The first time was in the 50's. I don't know for sure, but I am guessing that the Gunther mill dam elevation is around 649 to 50.
Old plug Posted February 17, 2014 Author Posted February 17, 2014 I don't know anymore but i know it has been shallower behind my dock. X Factor i think you might be right about the dick damage and deicers. It can alsobe worse if your dock is facing south or south west or southwest. that where our warm weather comes from.
laker67 Posted February 17, 2014 Posted February 17, 2014 drove across the glaize arm this morning. the ice appears to be melting on top. Looks wet instead of frosty like it has been.
