ryan Posted February 18, 2014 Posted February 18, 2014 Hey guys was gonna come up and prefish/look around for an upcoming tournament. Was planning on fishing grandglaize to dam. Do you guys think there will be open water or open ramps by Friday? Thanks in advance
fishinwrench Posted February 18, 2014 Posted February 18, 2014 I wanna say yeah, but it's really hard to say since we haven't had ice like this in over 2 decades. Not sure how long it will take to melt. I used to hit small lakes and strip pits immediately after ice-out and almost always had an exceptional day of it. I think there's some science concerning mass oxygen release when a lake locked up with ice finally thaws. Had an insanely good day fishing the edge of an ice shelf within sight of Alhonna quite a few years back, I'll never forget that. Crazy! If you can find an ice shelf over a hump or dropoff you might locate a school of big fish, but finding ANOTHER one will likely be impossible. I guess my point is that anything you learn immediately after the thaw probably won't be of much use to you a week or two later.
ryan Posted February 18, 2014 Author Posted February 18, 2014 It's not really about finding the immediate bite I look around using my electronics at places they will be setting up on in a couple weeks. I probably won't fish much but will do a lot of looking on the electronics
fishinwrench Posted February 18, 2014 Posted February 18, 2014 That sounds like torture. LOL Google earth and a topo map. Save your gas
fishinwrench Posted February 18, 2014 Posted February 18, 2014 Just FYI: The current image on Google Maps is from a low water period. You can see the shoreline makeup down to 654.6
Old plug Posted February 18, 2014 Posted February 18, 2014 i been watching the nice all day. thru the window. i have not seen one crack appear. i turned off my de icer yesterday about noon. i had a place cleared out into the lake about 30ft in front of my dock. it froze right back by about midnight. That was a surprise since the temperature in the air was still higher than freezing. By morning it was better than 1/2 " This ice must be very very cold and hard. Right now it looks like there a tiny amount of melt on top of it. Normally I would expect to see some cracking by now.
laker67 Posted February 18, 2014 Posted February 18, 2014 crossed the glaize this morning with everything still socked in. Was at the 5mm of the big Niangua just a few moments ago. Its is broke out on owens point for about 200yds and that is it. Every duck and seagull are sitting in that open water pocket. I would say Friday is going to be rushing it.
fishinwrench Posted February 18, 2014 Posted February 18, 2014 Pretty good sized crack on the main lake from the mouth of the Glaze up towards the Lodge. Almost wide enough for a bass boat.
Jerry Rapp Posted February 18, 2014 Posted February 18, 2014 I think Wrench got it right a day or so ago. Looks like some warm rain tomorrow and Thursday. A semi warm night, then some sun tomorrow (the sun is a lot higher in the sky now), and then a good 1 inch rain. Who knows. I guess can always hope. My golf course was too muddy to play today, and my lakes are still solid ice.
