Hughesy Posted March 21, 2015 Posted March 21, 2015 Why does the blue work better than the orange? I paint a few lures for friends & family, Nobody has requested the blue. In fact, a blue twin tail grub on a green pumpkin/orange finesse jig will stroke the River smallies after a big summer rain. Usually its a swimming jig deal. Makes sense they would hit this color. This is why I came up with the blue belly craw for Storm and BPS. This is the long pinchered crawfish. The most populated craw in our Southwest Missouri lakes. See any blue? Muddy Water 1
Guest Posted March 21, 2015 Posted March 21, 2015 I like the powder blue color, almost Caribbean blue. The one I painted is regular blue. So I might go back & add powder blue.

Very little of the green pumpkin color.

The most populated craw in our Southwest Missouri lakes. See any blue? We set out traps for crawdads in about 15 feet deep in our dock slip every now and again and that is the only color we ever catch. They range in size anywhere from 4" to about 8" on average from claw tip to tail. I had some custom baits painted by Dwayne at Baitwerks a few years back and his "Batey Craw" is what I chose because it most closely resembles the pic you shared above. I also recently purchased some of your BPS pattern craw wiggle wart in the blue craw. I also used to catch craws by hand in the shallows when I was younger and only ever saw 2 type of species. The Long Pincerer Tim posted and a smaller brown/rusty and orange colored one that had smaller bulkier/meatier claw. Those were more rare and I hardly see them anymore. They also never really got over 3 or 4" long. Craw Patterns « Baitwerks.html
dtrs5kprs Posted March 21, 2015 Posted March 21, 2015 These were everywhere last June. Color varied from the basic green pumpkin to a darker green. Assume they are a different craw, but guess it could be a stage.

I have no idea what I'm talking about though. They could very well be identical.

Guest Posted March 22, 2015 Posted March 22, 2015 The green pumpkin craw with big black shell & pin striped red shell, looks tough to duplicate. I might try red as a base stencil & shoot transparent black swiftly over the red. Hopefully it will leave enough red to look right.
