Members steven tolly Posted March 6, 2014 Members Posted March 6, 2014 Hey Phil and others We are headed down for our annual trip in a few weeks and I need to pick up a new spinning rod for the trip. What action should I go with for fishing a jig and possibly drifting power bait etc? I can always use one of my medium bass rods for drifting power bait, but was hoping to go with something lighter. I am sure I need something lighter to try casting a jig like I have been watching phil do, plus I might try drifting a jig under a float on it from time to time. We use our fly rods most the time, but I want to have a good spinning rod to play with when I want. Thanks for the help Steven
Ham Posted March 6, 2014 Posted March 6, 2014 I really think you need a light or a non buggy whip UL. You need to be able to throw the jigs and fight the fish in a way that is enjoyable. I use a Crossfire 6'8" UL that Richard Cross sells thru his White River Zig Jig website. It has as much rod above the handle as some 7' rods I own. I also use the Dorber Ozark Mountain Traditions 7 foot UL rod (OMT84). You can buy them direct them thru Dorber in Flippin. Both of these rods will throw the Zig Jigs well , detect strikes, set the hook well , and wear the fish down while protecting the light line 4 and 6 lb needed to fish the jigs properly. I'm sure there are lots of rods that will work, but I know these two do. Every Saint has a past, every Sinner has a future. On Instagram @hamneedstofish
duckydoty Posted March 6, 2014 Posted March 6, 2014 Phil sells the exact rods he uses at his shop. You can even get the combo set up ready to fish with line rod and reel. I have 5 of them. A Little Rain Won't Hurt Them Fish.....They're Already Wet!! Visit my website at.. Ozark Trout Runners

Sac River Jim Posted March 6, 2014 Posted March 6, 2014 ive ckd out the rods phil uses and they are quality i wish i'd had the money to buy one when i was down there on vacation last week.
Seth Posted March 6, 2014 Posted March 6, 2014 I use a 7' light action BPS Microlite spinning rod for all of my trout fishing. When throwing the 1/8oz jigs, I wish I had the medium light but the light get's the job done. Ultralights are just too weak for my liking when throwing jigs straight.
Travis Swift Posted March 6, 2014 Posted March 6, 2014 I have a couple of the sore lip series rods from trout magnet and I love them! They are 6'6 and stout for casting a jig but the tip is soft for fighting fish on light line. They are only like $35 to.
Travis Swift Posted March 6, 2014 Posted March 6, 2014 i also have a couple of Falcon 5'6 ultralight rods that i like alot as well but last year i bought the 6'6 sore lipper series and like them even better and i like that longer rod alot better and they are half the price. I still use the Falcons though and they are really nice on the dock if your fishing under a roof because it's easier to set the hook without hitting your rod on the roof.
RSBreth Posted March 6, 2014 Posted March 6, 2014 I use the 7' Microlight in Med/Light. I haven't cast Phil's so I can't say if they're a lot better or not but that's what I use.
Members whatnext Posted March 6, 2014 Members Posted March 6, 2014 I bought a 6'6 rod from Phil's a couple years ago and throw on a little abu reel and it's great all around set up on tanney, even a good crappie rod.
