FW, I clipped fins with the biologists till my hands were sore on a shock boat trip years ago. We never clipped the front pelvic fins just the fins on the back half of the fish. They alternate between left & right rear pelvic and adipose with each year class of stockers. It gives them a way to estimate growth rates when the shock & sample in the Fall.

Simple Solution? Micro chipping is expensive. Putting a tag in their back works, but the tags can and are taken out by fisherman making it difficult to tell if the fish was tagged in the first place during mark/recapture studies. Clipping the fin is a quick and easy way to identify them when MDC does shocking surveys. Micro chipping fish requires more equipment and time when they are on the boat as you would have to scan every fish that comes into the boat. It is much easier to have visual cues.

Yes simple solution, been there done that, you can get a good reader for about 500.00 the chips themselves ( last I checked about 2 bucks each ) but that was a few years ago. I wouldn't call that expensive to be honest with you. As to the tags put a reward on them Florida did it with redfish and it was extremely popular. You got a nice farmable certificate with the information about the fish and a shirt. the really cool thing was I had caught 1 that had been caught 7 times before me and I had the info on my certificate and that fish should still be swimming as it was well over the slot limit. I call that one heck of a good program.

$2.00 for a chip vs. $0.00 for clipping. Clipping is much less expensive. its FREE.

There are two types of people. Those who dream dreams and wish, then there are the do'ers. I am a do'er!

There is no way to positively ID a fish with a clipped fin without DNA testing and that is much more expensive than a chip. With a chip recapture data is more valuable based on accuracy and that data is value as it tells the history so to speak of the fish and its DNA line without invasive disfigurement of the fish and expensive DNA testing.

I have one of those redfish reward shirts from when I worked for FMRI, it was a hot item.

I'm having trouble with the names, but thinking in Jensen there was the one right across the street from the nook with a good fish sand., I always liked the Dolphin bar, and there were a couple pretty good ones downtown, one had great breakfast.
