dtrs5kprs Posted March 14, 2014 Posted March 14, 2014 Does the color of the head really make a difference?? Just curious; I have not fished the rig much but planning to get after it in the next couple weeks ( I really hate being a responsible adult with a job especially this time of year) I don't think it does in clear water. Most of my heads are brown or green pumpkin-ish, with an occasional purple thrown in. I paint them for other reasons than color. Ned uses a variety of colors, and in stained water it might make a difference. Especially the red and chartreuse heads. Not something we have to worry about very often. Have caught them on the same color heads in 2012 in brown water and last year with 15' (and more) visibility. I have talked with folks from the KC area who know Ned and use the little rig that use those bright heads at Table Rock and do well.
Guest Posted March 14, 2014 Posted March 14, 2014 I thought it was fitting, bc my Dad hates the little rig.

Guest Posted March 14, 2014 Posted March 14, 2014 Best Yoda quote: Size matters not, … Look at me. Judge me by size, do you?
Old plug Posted March 14, 2014 Posted March 14, 2014 I am a. sceptic of this ned rig. I have seen many claimed miracles fail in close to 70 yrs. I intend to however carry one with me this spring and judge for myself. In that vein I want to show you some tiny sinko worms i bought recently at BPS. they are about the right size for a net rig and come 17 or 18 to a box. Looks cheaper than tearing up a lot of expensive worms.

Looks cheaper than tearing up a lot of expensive worms. image.jpg Plug...those will work, and I still carry some. They have a different action that works at times. Of course there is a "but" coming. A couple actually. But...they will not save you money. One bag of Zinkerz/Zeros is about $4 per 6. Cut, you now have 12 baits. And they will last for many fish. Ned has documented a single bait that caught well over 100 fish before needing to be replaced, and I have seen similar results. The stik-o, 3" senko is good for perhaps 1-5 fish before it is shot. Quick math tells you which is the better value. Occasionally I find the 3" BPS stick at the outlet store in the worm bar and will buy some, b/c that can be pretty cheap. The other "but" regards action. Compared to elaztech those are very stiff and dead. At times (slow bite, very cold water) that can be good. One of my favorite cold water baits on the little rig is 1/2 of a fish doctor. Pretty much defines do-nothing. The 3" sticks are in that category. Once we are past 40 degrees or so, the elaztech will whip it hands down. If you try it you will like it, as long as you enjoy catching fish. LOZ is a perfect lake for it. Bill Ward and Roger Kehde are just a couple of the Warsaw area fisherman using it with good results. Lots of KC folks bringing it down as well. One last suggestion...on those 3" sticks I just use a 1/32oz crappie ball head and sharpen the hook.
Ham Posted March 15, 2014 Posted March 15, 2014 Geez Dave don't make my competition at the outlet store worse than it is already. Barlow's does have the 3 inch generic senkos in bulk for less than 10 cents a pop. I feel like I can average about 5 fish per bait fish on a LC ball head, but that's still nothing near the longevity of the cut Zero. However , if you are willing to use up stuff you have already in your possession, you'll save a few dollars, but your results may suffer a tad. I've tried to buy the correct JIgheads and the preferred baits. I'm trying remove as many variables as possible and be able to concentrate on the technique.
