Members C&R Posted April 16, 2014 Members Posted April 16, 2014 Please, someone post something about smallies,,,,,,,,,I am dying to hear if anyone is doing any good at all. Ok, sorry guys this isn't a smallmouth story, but,,,,,,,,,,,, We were chasing white bass last Fri on the Spring River east of Neosho above Twin Bridges in Oklahoma,,,,,,,,not catching anything worth bragging about,,,,,,,,,,but as we were "trolling" back down the river toward the bridge, I hooked "a log" on my 6lb test line using a 2" white crank bait. Hit reverse on the motor to try and keep it from breaking off the log,,,,,,,,,,then, it seems like something was slowly pulling my line, but I am thinking surely '' not a fish" that heavy,,,,,,,,,,yep, something was pullin for sure. Well, after about 30 min of slowly following something with my boat, I got over him and was finally able to start dragging him up. Well as u can imagine, it was a spoonbill.........snagged in the tail with 1 hook,,,,,,,,,,after getting him to the surface, he decided to go down again for another 15 min or so........Finally, we got him up and with our net getting 1/2 of him and grabbing the other half with his paddle,,,,,,,,,,,we got him in the boat...........6 lb test and 1 hook in the tail.........yahoo. Is it time for smallies????????? Anyone got a report about a real fish................meaning not a spoonbill

Hog Wally Posted April 16, 2014 Posted April 16, 2014 I would say its perfect on the meramec from robertsville up to whereever
fishinwrench Posted April 16, 2014 Posted April 16, 2014 That's considerably more "sporting" than the typical method and it's associated gear. I caught one that size on a flyrod and 8# tippet once. Wore me flat out.
Old plug Posted April 16, 2014 Posted April 16, 2014 every year in July they seem to show up in my area. I had bent the tying loop on the end of a plug and was was on the dock casting it trying to get it to run straight again. This thing I think was just swimming along and the line ran over his bill. the plug slipped up the bill and got stuck in the soft spot between the three bones just in front of the eyes where the bill starts. There was no great rush are flying into the air. It was more like havering you lure attached to the back of a boat drifting away. I have no idea how long it took to bring it in but I do not think it was 1/2 hr. As son as i was aware I had something heavy on there I lightened up and took my Time. I have caught 20 lb blues that have given me a worse battle than this thing did. This does happen more than many realize. I used to know a man at my locale Elks lodge that got one off his dock was over 80 lbs on a tail spinner while fishing for white bass. I do not really know for sure what the line test but I will guess it was about 10lb. This one was 48
