jmes Posted May 24, 2014 Posted May 24, 2014 Headed down Sunday morning for our Annual fishathon. We usually get out our spinning reels with 4 lb line and go after them. It's definitely a change up from Bass fishing and those fish put up a good fight for there size Just curious if anybody else has been after them tasty but mighty fish.
Root Admin Phil Lilley Posted May 24, 2014 Root Admin Posted May 24, 2014 I do. Easy to catch if you can locate them. When I say locate- they're all over the lake. I fish for them in the dam area. Points and pea gravel bank coves. Question is how deep. I don't usually go till late June so not sure where they'd be right now. Drop crickets and pieces of worm down to them. Hold on to your rod cause we hook big bass and catfish too!
Quillback Posted May 24, 2014 Posted May 24, 2014 Good luck jmes, and if you find them I'd be interested to hear how deep and what cover they are on. Every once in while I like to fish for them.

Oh yeah, I'm loading the truck this morning for three glorious days of Bluegill fishing in southern Illinois. After what you showed me, would one of those Tenkara rods fit the bill? "Honor is a man's gift to himself" Rob Roy McGregor
Old plug Posted May 24, 2014 Posted May 24, 2014 Oh yeah, I'm loading the truck this morning for three glorious days of Bluegill fishing in southern Illinois. Your certainlyheaded tovthe rigt area. southern ILL was one of three areas we considered as retirement. The lakes like Little Grasy, Devils Kitchen, and Egypt are some of my old sromping grounds. Then there is Crab Orchard. the monster bas that used to xome out of that shallow muddy place would would put all our reservoirs to shame. I do not know why so many kayakers do not hit the strip pits also in central ILL. I necer se anything about all that on here.
Greasy B Posted May 24, 2014 Posted May 24, 2014 would one of those Tenkara rods fit the bill? I don't think so. One if the great pleasures of fly fishing is feeling the line shoot through the guides on the forward cast. For Gills nothing beats a 9' 3wt. The moon phase isn't prime right now but in a couple of weeks........ I'll be calling you. dtrs5kprs Posted May 24, 2014 Posted May 24, 2014 Don't overlook deeper wood or brush piles on or near places like Phil described. We catch a fair number of bigger gills on Ned Rigs when bass fishing around that stuff. 15'-30' or so. Would think a little piece of trick worm on a 1/16 oz head would do, if you don't have the parts for the full on Ned.
