gitnby Posted May 27, 2014 Posted May 27, 2014 Fished a redfin Fri., Sat. & Sun morning early. Caught several nice K's and Jaws. Had quite a few blow up on the fin and miss it, and I didn't have my white fluke ready to use as a follow-up. Grabbed a rod with a 1/2 Zero (coppertreuse) on the Ned, and threw back on the swirl and let it sink a few feet and reeled it back. Caught fish 2 of the 3 times I tried that! Also, my Son and I were fishing the Ned along the inside of a pea gravel sec. point. I had a real tiny smallie on for a second and as I swept the rod to set him,he came loose and almost immediately, a 3lber grabbed it and pretty much hooked himself. Later, my Son was shaking a snag loose and as it came free another nice smallie grabbed it. So, we decided to try some thing a little different. After the initial cast, we would let it set, and if they didn't hit it, we would snap it back with the rod tip. We must have caught at least a dozen more that way. Fish were really aggresive the past 3 days. We averaged 20-25 every morning from 5:30 till 9, with about 40% being keepers. Biggest were a 3 1/2 # smallie, 3lb K and a 3+ LM. We used the Ned, spit-shot w/green pumpkin fish DR and redfin.
bluebasser86 Posted May 27, 2014 Posted May 27, 2014 It also works cast at schooling fish, I caught several casting at busting fish with a PB&J Ned a couple weeks ago.
Quillback Posted May 27, 2014 Posted May 27, 2014 Thanks for the report, Gitn - smallie must have been fun on the light tackle.
Hughesy Posted May 27, 2014 Posted May 27, 2014 Here a little lure that I have had great success with. It wakes like a redfin but if you get a blow up just push your arms out and give it some slack line. The back bait falls down in a zig zag motion and usually gets ate. Its like the old drop spook pradco use to make. The little plastic piece between the front and back lure usually breaks off but it works fine with out it. I also trim the tubing on the nose flush with the lure also. Its called the double take. $7 a BPS
dtrs5kprs Posted May 27, 2014 Posted May 27, 2014 Don...you hit it. They will flat eat that little rig up if you swim it through chasers, singles or bunches. If you are "Nedding" along a bank or point and they pop, there is no reason to dive for a grub or fluke.

One of those purchases that you say probably won't work at all but have to buy it just to see. LOL Guess I need to tie it on and actually give it a chance.

Have you tried it?

dtrs5kprs Posted May 27, 2014 Posted May 27, 2014 Not sure if our experience with 'snapping' the NED was just an oddity or what? Have you tried it? Yes on the snapping. Will throw it at those popping fish, especially singles, and slow swim it down about 5-10', then will snap it a time or two. Just make it dart. They will also hammer it as you start to take it away, like the smoke grub trick. Think they will at times eat any bait that snaps off cover like that, and it is something we do with it in brushpiles in the summer. Short of putting a bobber on one I've used it about every way imaginable. And guys do fish it with a float like an F&F. Not sure it can be fished wrong, as long as you don't run it too quickly, snapping aside.
