Ham Posted June 4, 2014 Posted June 4, 2014 I've had my current lawn mover for about 14 years. It is a John Deere 15 HP with a hydrostatic transmission. It's been a real nice mower for me and has paid for itself over the years, but even with repair and maintainence, there comes a time when you need to replace tools. I'm going to need to replace this mower. I have several acres to mow so it has to be a ride on mower. I'd rather have the automatic transmisson, but I could manage to use a manual transmission. I want to keep it to two blades and likely keep the cutting width < 50 inches. I'd love to hear the good , the bad, and the ugly from folks that have bought lawn mowers similar to what I am looking at in the last 5 years or so. Terrierman Posted June 4, 2014 Posted June 4, 2014 Don't get a Cub Cadet, I did and actually gave it away when it was shot in three years. I've now got a 24HP Husqvarna with a 48" reinforced deck (there's a 3/4" steel tube around most of it) and it seems to be a good one. No trouble after two years. It does have three blades though, I think most of the 48" decks do. That's not the same as saying get a Husqvarna, just it's a lot better mower than that POS Cub Cadet.
5bites Posted June 4, 2014 Posted June 4, 2014 I say whatever the guy that mows my yard with is good enough for me. I hate mowing and he only charges $25.
Guest Posted June 4, 2014 Posted June 4, 2014 Ive got a 50" Woods zero turn mower with a 3 cylinder Kubota diesel engine, 21Hp Those diesels dont bog down in heavy grass like gasoline engines, keep that in mind. I mow 5 acres every 7 days, its given me zero problems in 5 years of owning it. Grasshoppers are excellent machines too. You need to get away from the lawn tractor, the zero turns are far superior unless you mow less than 1 acre.
Ham Posted June 4, 2014 Author Posted June 4, 2014 I've never heard a guy running a zero turn mower say they wanted to go back to the traditional model. Every Saint has a past, every Sinner has a future. On Instagram @hamneedstofish
Justin Spencer Posted June 4, 2014 Posted June 4, 2014 Zero turn for sure. I just got a new ferris, it is much smoother than my gravely, independent suspension on all 4 wheels. Pricey but your back will thank you. Any will be good with just a few acres to mow, commercial ones are high, but will take a beating, homeowner ones just need a little more tlc, but should last if you take it easy. Al Agnew Posted June 5, 2014 Posted June 5, 2014 Another vote for zero turn mowers. You'll never dream of going back to the regular riding mowers after you use a good zero turn. I don't mow a whole lot of yard...I'd rather have the fields in front of the house in warm season grass than looking like a golf course. But I wouldn't do without the Dixon ZTR zero turn...unless it's the Toro zero turn that I bought for the house out in Montana.
Ham Posted June 5, 2014 Author Posted June 5, 2014 I try to keep my yard reasonably maintained, but it doesn't look anything like Augusta National that's for sure. Well... maybe like the second or third rough. I'll start looking into the Zero Turn mowers. Every Saint has a past, every Sinner has a future. On Instagram @hamneedstofish
