Root Admin Phil Lilley Posted July 4, 2014 Root Admin Posted July 4, 2014 Never been a soccer fan for the same reasons most have stated - didn't understand rules or strategy and such - but I've watched quite a bit of the games in this world cup and I'm warming up to the game. Of course, at this level, the passing is amazing and one can learn real fast what a good play looks like. yeah- I'm becoming a soccer fan but I doubt if I watch many games after the WC is over... heck I don't have time to watch REAL football anymore. Rather be fishing...
Quillback Posted July 5, 2014 Posted July 5, 2014 Watched some of the Germany vs France match - good game.
Jerry Rapp Posted July 5, 2014 Posted July 5, 2014 just watched my first "shoot out". Costa Rica and the Dutch I think. Pure luck, and not a way to determine a winner. They should play until someone wins with a real goal.
Quillback Posted July 6, 2014 Posted July 6, 2014 Yeah the shoot out kinda stinks in my opinion. But they need to end the game somehow. Looking forward to Germany vs Brazil.

Baseball isn't 1/10 as physically taxing as soccer. Especially in a tournament setting like the World Cup. We are talking about players standing around/sitting about 95% of the time vs. almost constantly running. Big difference.
stlfisher Posted July 7, 2014 Posted July 7, 2014 If FIFA would change the substitution rule which is currently a max of 3 per team per game (and you don't get to come back in), then maybe they could keep playing, but soccer is more of a chess match, with scoring a premium. A shootout is really the only way to end it without exhausting teams and crippling them for the next game. Personally, I would like them to just take players off the field until someone scores...that would be exciting and it would be over pretty quick.
ollie Posted July 7, 2014 Author Posted July 7, 2014 I'm telling ya, the old MLS shoot out was the best way to end a game, but since it wasn't FIFA approved the league had to get rid of it. stlfisher Posted July 7, 2014 Posted July 7, 2014 Yeah, that was pretty good too! I also think it would be cool to have each team take set pieces or corners until someone scored...that would make for some drama.
