Guest Posted July 15, 2014 Posted July 15, 2014 I've got a skunk under the front porch. Its an active shooter, because my dog might have been sprayed. Not sure, but the vapor is thick in this muggy afternoon heat. It will burn your throat if you breathe it too hard. It's lingering around the porch, now the AC is pulling it into the house. Any Skunk Experts out there?

To deal with your skunk: Live trap with a can of cat food for bait. Tarp over the live trap to pick it up and transport. Trap and skunk into river. If the skunk can hold his breath for ten minutes, release him to swim in the river. Otherwise on the bank for buzzards, crows or worms. About the odor. There are three things I guarantee to work, nothing else will. It's July. What will work to remove skunk odor from the dog are August, September and October. P.S. Open the can of cat food. Skunks are illiterate and cannot read the label on the can of cat food. Even if they could I doubt they would be able to open it.

jdmidwest Posted July 15, 2014 Posted July 15, 2014 If you can find a trap made out of a solid pvc pipe, they are the best. Not enough room to let the tail come up to spray and easy to transport. Check with local pest control to see if they have one. Cat food is good bait. Smaller live traps are better for them, more confinement. I like to crawl in holes. Shooting them is always an option. Since it has already sprayed the area once, there will not be much difference it he does it again. But, if you shoot, there is a high chance he will spray again. A trap will prevent that. Ive got a Oval Galvanized Stock Tank, 2 ft. W x 4 ft. L x 2 ft. H, 100 gal. Capacity that would drown him just fine. Should I set the trap near the drowning area (water trough) or the front porch? Will I get sprayed while trying to transport it from the porch area?
Wayne SW/MO Posted July 15, 2014 Posted July 15, 2014 Be very careful, they are a top carrier of rabies. Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.
Guest Posted July 15, 2014 Posted July 15, 2014 Be very careful, they are a top carrier of rabies. Is there any truth to the old saying "if you see them in the daylight, they have rabies" ?? Ive seen a group of coons out in the daylight too, just wondering if they all have rabies.

If he's living under the porch, near there. I've never been sprayed when the tarp is over the trap and skunk is in the dark and can't see you. But like the investment guys all say, past performance doesn't guarantee future results. P.S. Do let us know how this turns out.
