nathanhooper Posted July 18, 2014 Posted July 18, 2014 I know its been brought up before, but I wanted to get everyones opinion who uses still what they have found. I am curious to the accuracy of it. I'll try it out myself, but I just downloaded and installed it. MUCH better detail than what I have been used to, but I have one issue with it right off the bat. I am scrolling around the dam end of the lake and I notice that a lot of honey creek is in blue. According to this there are quite a few docks in 1' of water.... I'm just wondering why the lack of detail there. Doesn't bother me if its just because they don't have it, but what about the rest of the lake? Is it relatively close? I'm just looking for something to help me get a feel for the lay of the land and while the topo I have been using has "worked", it only gives me a very rough idea of what the topography is like.
zarraspook Posted July 18, 2014 Posted July 18, 2014 As always -- you get what you pay for !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Their $ 199.00 chip has a lot more detail.......... "Look up OPTIMIST in the dictionary - there is a picture of a fishing boat being launched"
nathanhooper Posted July 18, 2014 Author Posted July 18, 2014 Don't know how to put a chip in my phone.... Oh, I figure with enough dough I can pay someone to put a fish on the end of my line anytime I'm ready to reel one in. Just curious how accurate the iPhone app in particular is. I may one day afford to have a fancy smancy sonar combo unit with a 50" big screen, then I'll pay big bucks for the mapping. For now, just a better idea of whats under the boat will do. Just don't want it to be 30' north and 80' east of where my boat is - if you catch my drift.
J-Doc Posted July 18, 2014 Posted July 18, 2014 I like the app. I haven't paid much attention to the dam end. I find its pretty accurate. Need marine repair? J-Doc Posted July 18, 2014 Posted July 18, 2014 I just looked at my app and it does not show detail in Honey Creek. I suspect it's because it was not scanned. You should expand your map and look at intercostal waters. It's dead on with a friends Garmin chartplotter in SW Florida. For that matter, I can look at the Bahamas and see depths. You get a lot for this app in my opinion. My Elite 5dsi would not work with Hot Maps so the app filled in the blanks for me on Beaver. Need marine repair? marcusearlt Posted July 18, 2014 Posted July 18, 2014 Any depths that are shallower than where you set your safety depth in your map settings will be blue. Funny thing is that I'm looking at Honey Creek on my Iphone and I am missing a whole lot more detail than you are. Overall though this app has been great. I have used it in Arkansas and in Texas to key in on places I thought would be productive for a lot less $$ than a sonar with comparable capabiliites. Great deal for 10 bucks.
