ness Posted July 29, 2014 Posted July 29, 2014 Here Not sure how much, if any, of this is new info. Interesting to see the people's perspectives though. John
GloryDaze Posted July 29, 2014 Posted July 29, 2014 Yeah Ness, my neighbor grabbed me tonight and asked if I read the article. I hadn't seen it so he brought the Star over. Rather interesting to put some faces with names as well. By the way, 40,000 people put on the water each year is crazy. Follow me on Twitter @DazeGlory
ColdWaterFshr Posted July 29, 2014 Posted July 29, 2014 Well written article, but the title of it is a little bit misleading. I'm a fan of the rivers and I support the proposed management plans -- something needs to be done.
Flysmallie Posted July 29, 2014 Posted July 29, 2014 Interesting to see the people's perspectives though. Yes it is. No matter how ignorant that perspective may be. Â Â
David Unnerstall Posted July 29, 2014 Posted July 29, 2014 What I don't understand is the desire for the MDC to assume control. Aren't we all resenful of them intervening in our freedoms, too? What if they do take over and put elk there?
Wayne SW/MO Posted July 29, 2014 Posted July 29, 2014 My take is that ATV's need solid material, jet boats need water, floaters need rivers. Seems simple to me. The Niangua has been a river I have watched for 50 years and the Missouri DNR couldn't have done a worse job of managing it if they tried. Maybe I misspoke and should have said they haven't managed it at all and may not know where it is. Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.
Al Agnew Posted July 30, 2014 Posted July 30, 2014 The Niangua? Nobody has responsibility for managing it. Just like all the other rivers other than the ones that flow through extensive national forest lands or the Scenic Riverways. The DNR's responsibility ends at the mouth of Bennett Spring, unless there's a real pollution problem somewhere along the river. Heck, the Corps of Engineers doesn't even have anything to do with the lower Niangua since Lake of the Ozarks isn't a COE lake. I rented a room from the guy at The Landing one time. I won't again. I'm simply very sad about the Scenic Riverways situation. I guarantee you that the Park Service is going to bow to the rabid fringe of the locals and the doofus politicians and not change anything. Such real treasures, and they are going to continue to go down the tubes.
Ham Posted July 30, 2014 Posted July 30, 2014 I hate to think about it, but at some point WHOEVER is deemed to be in charge will have to start limiting access to a certain number of bodies per day on these rivers. First 1000 people or whatever. I don't expect to have anything to myself, but at some point we can love the places to death. Every Saint has a past, every Sinner has a future. Troutnut69 Posted July 30, 2014 Posted July 30, 2014 How anyone could read the statement that just ONE outfitter puts 40,000 people on the river in a year and not realize that there is a definite problem is beyond me. I don't know what the river and area around it were like 20 years ago because I didn't frequent them at that time , but I can tell you that in the last 10 years the numbers of people using the area seems to have boomed. If it continues to get worse in the upcoming 10 years (which it will unless something is done) I can definitely see it becoming a very beautiful area...that I have no desire to visit anymore.
woodman Posted July 30, 2014 Posted July 30, 2014 I was weaned on camping and fishing Elk river around 1964.. You could find cans and bottles in the river back then--- Now I avoid it like the plague, it is a freaking zoo down there on weekends.... http://s147.photobucket.com/albums/r302/scrawford_photos/
