Members Dman Posted August 22, 2014 Members Posted August 22, 2014 My nephew and I floated the Big Piney from Slabtown to Wilderness Ridge Resort a couple weekends ago. We were lucky to experience: rain, lighting, fog, super high humidity, a microburst, a Super Moon, a head wind the last 13 miles and a few fish. All in all a great wilderness experience! I have to give a shout out to all the great people we ran into along the way; especially the folks at Wilderness Ridge Resort who are some of the most gracious people I've ever met in my river journeys! The fishing was ok, a good number of small smallies on wacky rigged senkos and an ultralight topwater grasshopper. I'll be back for sure!
mic Posted August 22, 2014 Posted August 22, 2014 Love the (assume) deer rack on the kayak. Thanks for the report.
Members Dman Posted August 22, 2014 Author Members Posted August 22, 2014 You're right, I found it next to my kayak when we stopped due to the thunderstorm moving in on us hard! I thought that we might need a good luck charm at that point, and it worked, we made it thru! I'm thinking about taking it with me on every trip to bring me luck!
Wayne SW/MO Posted August 22, 2014 Posted August 22, 2014 Would that become a bow ornament? Looks like fun. Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.
Smalliebigs Posted August 22, 2014 Posted August 22, 2014 sweet!!!! you're a cool uncle...the memories will be thick....kudos
405z06 Posted August 22, 2014 Posted August 22, 2014 Love that stretch and I agree that Nancy and Tim(?) at Wilderness are a hoot. Even if you go there only 2-3x a year, they treat you like you are their favorite customer. 3-4 weeks ago we wanted to do that float but the rain had been rare and water was low, and they weren't putting people on at Slabtown, so Nancy recommended we float from Ross, through the Fort, and to Lay-Z days. I had always wanted to float through the Fort, so we did. We were in the double digits for smallmouth before we passed the pavilion at Rich's annex. It was unreal. The morning bite on both days was ridiculous. At the end of the second day I had "bass thumb" so bad it was bleeding, no joke, and that had never happened to me. I had been meaning to write up a report, maybe I'll do that tonight. Glad you had a good trip on the Piney!
moguy1973 Posted August 23, 2014 Posted August 23, 2014 Good to see the kid with a life jacket on. Sounds like a great trip! -- JimIf people concentrated on the really important things in life, there'd be a shortage of fishing poles. -- Doug Larson
