Tanderson15 Posted August 28, 2014 Posted August 28, 2014 Do people eat gar? If so how do you clean and cook them. Are they any good?
J-Doc Posted August 28, 2014 Posted August 28, 2014 Ask Fins. He will eat them. He's like Mikey. He will eat anything. Need marine repair? Send our own forum friend "fishinwrench" a message. nathanhooper Posted August 28, 2014 Posted August 28, 2014 I have read a lot on it, never caught one myself so can't say first hand, but hear it's very good. Just a little harder to clean. If I caught one I'd eat it.
Feathers and Fins Posted August 28, 2014 Posted August 28, 2014 Terry they are very good eating, Cleaning them is not as hard as people make it out to be. http://youtu.be/eOJZZsGCoLU I suggest getting a good pair of snips though Like this http://www.harborfreight.com/hand-tools/snips/heavy-duty-left-cut-aviation-tin-snips-90720.html mine are actually a lot heavier I bought them at ABC Supply in Lowell. There are many other videos but that's the fastest one on youtube time of video wise. As to the table fair I have seen them from 22 to 80 bucks a plate in good restaurants, I really like them myself and as you can see its basically a white meat back strap. https://www.facebook.com/pages/Beaver-Lake-Arkansas-Fishing-Report/745541178798856
J-Doc Posted August 28, 2014 Posted August 28, 2014 The smell, and appearance was enough to turn me away.I'd try it if someone cooked it. I hear if it's cooked right, it's awesome. Robert Haynes Posted August 28, 2014 Posted August 28, 2014 When I was a kid in south texas running 200 hooks on trot line for cats, I would get a lot of catfish bait out of them. We never ate them cuz we had too many catfish as well as speckled trout, reds and flounder when on the saltwater. It's all about how hungry you are and there needs to be a little hunger before the gar goes in the freezer. My wife is Italian and puts pigs feet in her spaghetti sauce. I imagine 100 years ago one day they had eaten the rest of the pig and only had the feet left. They were hungry and threw it in the pot and now it has become tradition. That's how I feel about gar, not that hungry yet.
J-Doc Posted August 28, 2014 Posted August 28, 2014 Not that hungry yet. That one made me chuckle!! Need marine repair? Send our own forum friend "fishinwrench" a message. He will treat you like family!!! I owe fishinwrench a lot of thanks. He has been a great mechanic with lots of patience!
Greasy B Posted August 29, 2014 Posted August 29, 2014 Yep, hunger is the best sauce. His father touches the Claw in spite of Kevin's warnings and breaks two legs just as a thunderstorm tears the house apart. Kevin runs away with the Claw. He becomes captain of the Greasy Bastard, a small ship carrying rubber goods between England and Burma. Michael Palin, Terry Jones, 1974
Champ188 Posted August 29, 2014 Posted August 29, 2014 Babler on the Table Rock forum likes to say about fishing in inclement winter weather: "I'm just not that mad at 'em."
