Al Agnew Posted September 24, 2014 Posted September 24, 2014 Jd, thanks for the detailed discussion of the merits of the AR platform. Not saying you changed my mind about anything...I still think there are a lot of people buying them for what I consider the wrong reasons, but I can see the real merits. Joe D, I think my point above and yours are pretty close. It seems these rifles have gotten more and more popular as they have become more and more under attack by the antis, and more and more people have decided that toting one makes a statement.
jdmidwest Posted September 24, 2014 Posted September 24, 2014 Jd, thanks for the detailed discussion of the merits of the AR platform. Not saying you changed my mind about anything...I still think there are a lot of people buying them for what I consider the wrong reasons, but I can see the real merits. Having been raised up around several gun collectors in the family, my interest in guns have surpassed most others. I bought my first AR back in the early 80's because I wanted to see what they were all about. Most in my family scorned me with the same misconceptions as many have still today, that thing is ugly and won't shoot. After the AR, I purchased a nice H&K 94. It was a better shooter than the AR, but my MHP uncle pointed out you could make it full auto with a beer tab and one was used to kill a fellow trooper in the western part of the state. I never tried to make it full auto, don't even know if it was possible, but it soured my family's opinion on it. I traded if off for a motorcycle before the Clinton gun ban and have regretted it ever since. Its worth about 5x what I paid for it today and is a rare piece of fine German workmanship. The Clinton gun ban made all of the AR guns stagnate for years, then it was expired in 2004 and they changed. Prices fell and innovations took place. This continued until Antigun fears started again in 2012 and prices soared. They have started to stablilize again and ammo is becoming plentiful and affordable again. As far as gun owners are concerned, they are getting more popular now because they are getting back to normal. It has nothing to do with the fear that they are going to try and take them away. "Life has become immeasurably better since I have been forced to stop taking it seriously." — Hunter S. Thompson
Kelroy Posted September 24, 2014 Posted September 24, 2014 Something to consider in terms of 'home defense' If you were faced with this scenario from across your living room, in the dark, would you rather have... 1. a shotgun in one hand and a flashlight in the other 2. a laser-mounted pistol in one hand and a flashlight in the other 3. both hands on an AR carbine mounted with a light and a laser Food for thought
Chief Grey Bear Posted September 24, 2014 Posted September 24, 2014 I have to question how often does this Hollywood situation ever happen in real life? I'm sure we would all I could be Clint Eastwood and just calmly pull the trigger and blow his head off. That's just not reality. I can't think of any hostage situation in the home that ended with the homeowner blowing his head off. But then again I don't ever hear all of the news. I'll have to check with the NRA. I'm sure they'll have some stats on it. Flysmallie Posted September 24, 2014 Posted September 24, 2014 I'd rather he just give me a second to pack her bags. Seriously I'm with Chief on this one. I doubt it's ever going to happen. I know you will think you need to be prepared in case it does but how prepared are you for other situations? Its more likely that a tornado will hit your house. What are you doing right now to prepare for that? Sooner or later some big object is going to come zooming in from outer space and hit the earth changing the world as we know it. What are you doing about that? I get it that people like to own guns, like to shoot. It's fun. I've always enjoyed it. But quit feeding us this line of crap about how you are going to be prepared for all these Hollywood scenarios. Time to grow up and quit playing make believe. Besides that guys already in a heap of trouble. He's no longer worried about me and my lady, he's more worried about the dog that is trying to destroy him. And while he's focused on that I'll do my best to beat him into submission with whatever object is handy. Â Â

Blonde trophy wife in a headlock with a pantyhosed dude in a business suit (though I find that a little odd because he doesn't fit the profile of most rednecks typically hated intruder, although on some level maybe he does) . . . . . and an OPSGEAR ad in the upper right corner - that is some awesome marketing right there. Most definitely this conjures up the first time I watched Dirty Harry. And I love your multiple choice question below it. Now we are getting somewhere. Question, Kelroy. How old are you? 12?
Bird Watcher Posted September 24, 2014 Posted September 24, 2014 Did anyone else think it was Cousin Eddie with panty hose over his face? I hope not. Hard times for Randy Quaid, comedic genius, if so.

Wayne SW/MO Posted September 24, 2014 Posted September 24, 2014 When I was a kid it was looked down on to hunt squirrels with anything but a 22 and head shots were mandatory. As far as home invasion goes walls don't offer much substance and firing a gun in side is akin to shotting through leaves, you never know what will stop the round. A shotgun offers the safest method because it's killing power diminishes pretty quick. I just lock my doors and rely on my early warning system, which is solid and dependable. If they get past that I have a 9mm and a lifetime of training that will allow me to make an intelligent choice if it comes to that. Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.
