Hmmm. This guy has know it was coming for a long, long time. Awful considerate of him to say he's sorry for all the people that are affected, but.... So, his story is he couldn't get anybody to tell him the exact amount? IRS wouldn't work with him?

It usually takes a ton of mismanagement before a biz gets stuck in a pickle like that. Hope the employees can find other work soon. No sympathy for those that brought on a hard time for other folks. No big deal to get a balance due from the IRS. Available online with approved access, bought an hour if you call with your papers in order. Use the 30 on hold to get that done.

It probably CAN be done in an hour but I wouldn't bet on it.

I'll never forget the crap I had to go thru, and all of the hourS I had to spend on hold just to get a freakin' form sent to me after my business got wiped off the map by a mid-March tornado.

I kept getting the "so you are terminating the business and surrendering your FEIN status, correct?"

NO! I am not terminating the business. I will be resuming business asap, but all of my 2005 records (soon to be due) are gone.

"I see, well just submit an average from the previous 2 years and include a notation".

OK, but my records of THOSE are gone also, can you provide me a copy?

"No I cannot".

So what step do I take now?

That scenario played out 4 times I think. And that was Federal. Then came the State.... Who became so put out by the whole thing that they issued me a absolutely REDICULIS "lead acid battery tax" bill that amounted to over 12x what I estimated that I had ever earned from selling batterys since I began dealing in them, apparently as some form of cruel punishment.

Taught me a lesson though, as I NOW guard those papers moreso than I guard the tools, books, and inventory that keep me in business.

Aaaaaand, I'll never sell another battery as long as I live.

Don't want to rain on the parade, BUT, he is supposed to owe well over a 100K in taxes according to the news. He didn't generate that from Circle J!

I knew the couple who owned it in the 80's and they ran it with a school aged teen. Granted they didn't have the resturant then, but I can't see that place earning enough to generate that much in taxes even if some are SS, etc. He must have generated the funds to but Circle J in some other business venture.

Kinda hard to know. It's likely been several years, and there may be interest and penalties added on there too. Story I saw said north of $200,000, and the judgement was a year ago, so it started well before that.

Yes it appears that they were non-compliant and delinquent with payment. The service will always provide a wage & income and transcripts of past filings if you know to ask. Usually right away after your initial waste of time on the phone. They only phone, fax , or snail mail, so do not answer any email from the IRS.

after about 25 years we moved our trailer out of there about 18 months ago. one of the few times I've been on the lucky end of a bad timeline and situation. Feel bad for everyone that's innocent victoms here.
