Ham Posted November 14, 2014 Author Posted November 14, 2014 I should have taken a quick pic of some of my smallies too. Next time. Every Saint has a past, every Sinner has a future. On Instagram @hamneedstofish
Guest Posted November 15, 2014 Posted November 15, 2014 spotted bass taste almost as good as crappie. I wouldn't eat the smallmouth or largemouth, but those Kentucky's might find a fish cooker in their future. that's if I could find time to fish before the glacier sets in
Ham Posted November 15, 2014 Author Posted November 15, 2014 So I hear TRF. I just love the Spotted bass so much that I have a hard time putting a knife to them. They were the cloest thing to Smallies I had when I was living in Louisiana. I won't kill a smallie to eat . Every keeper walleye is kept (I've never reached my legal limit). I'll keep crappie and the right size catfish too. Thanks to getting pointed in the right direction by Richard Cross, I will keep trout a few times a year now and make trout cakes or fish Tacos. This is a bitter cold snap to be sure. I'd love our seasonal norms about right now. Every Saint has a past, every Sinner has a future. On Instagram @hamneedstofish
aarchdale@coresleep.com Posted November 16, 2014 Posted November 16, 2014 From a Divers stand point. The small mouth population is 20x the walleye. See more Smallies than any other specie. I have walley and crappie in the freeze so I don't usually keep bass but if I didn't i sure wouldn't feel bad about it. Not sure why a bass guy can keep a walleye that are not as near abundant, and casterate everyone else for keeping a bass. I dive a ton and all I can say is the bass are Thriving.
aarchdale@coresleep.com Posted November 16, 2014 Posted November 16, 2014 I might also add to me this applies to bull. With the pressure table rock has. If everybody kept bass it May hurt. But bull gets a quarter of the pressure.
Ham Posted November 17, 2014 Author Posted November 17, 2014 Well Archdale for me, walleye are a put and take fishery where the fish become legal keepers in 3-4 years. I really enjoy cooking them in a variety of ways. I fully acknowledge that I'm being tender hearted about the smallies. As long as people are fishing legal, they are within their rights to keep fish. I'd rather ppl disn't keep 20 inch bass for the table, but that's their choice. Every Saint has a past, every Sinner has a future. On Instagram @hamneedstofish
dtrs5kprs Posted November 18, 2014 Posted November 18, 2014 I love dragging a grub around. It is (was) one of my favorite ways of catching fish, but a Ned will ruin you on that. Once you get the hang if the Ned, you will absolutely be costing yourself fish trying to force feed them a grub on points. IF you like fishing a grub, you've likely got the rod and reel you'll need for a Ned and the fishing skill set you need to detect the strikes. Good Luck and Good Fishing. You are just about all the way down the road to ruination...and no less correct for it. Zman does have a new page up that consolidates some of the info on the Ned.
Ham Posted November 18, 2014 Author Posted November 18, 2014 I'm going to have to take a longer lookat the z man product line. I think their plastic in addition to be VERY durable is also way more supple. The tail action on their grubs should be outstanding and that little bat wing deal may be a GREAT option when smallies are on points (as if I didin't have other ways to get after them). Members Tuffy Posted November 20, 2014 Members Posted November 20, 2014 I went by Bass Pro and picked up some of the Zman products. Like I need any more tackle in the boat. Haven't been able to get out yet, I am planning on spending a few days at Pontiac during the Thanksgiving holiday weekend. Hope to get out then. I am excited to give these a try.
