Chief,

Not trying to stir the pot any. Just some light reading on this pretty snowy day.. All I can say is that yes as humans we have screwed up our ecosystem. Just saying we as humans sometimes are called to balance things out. The days of nature taking care of itself are gone sad to say.

Shall I bring up the poor otter? HA! I hope not. Maybe we should crawl back into our caves, become hunter gatherers again and forget about this internet thing, :)

I don't like coyotes because they kill my lambs, as for what you were saying Scott about leaving deer over night, yesterday my 11 year old shot a doe at about 4 with his .223 at 60 yards, I saw it hump up and know he is a good shot so I figured easy find. We wait 30 minutes, find no blood after looking until dark. Decide to leave until morning find pretty quickly today, but coyotes had gotten hams, not a reason for me to hate coyotes, but can understand frustration when you do everything right but light fails you. I know you can track after dark, but it is much harder and you risk bumping a deer if you did make a poor shot. We will still enjoy the back straps and grind the shoulders, plus we must really knock back doe population for the health of our herd.

So if a cougar got a lamb then you'd be ok with shooting one on your property that wasn't in the act at the time, right ?

That would be much more reasonable than the “ I was being threatened” defense, but unless I knew I had a repeat offender I would probably let him walk, hell I can't even get a shot at a coyote and they are thick around here, but if I come across a dumb one I will shoot it, I will also skin it and sell the hide.

Wrench I would do in the cougar just before it got to Mrs. BilletHead so she would think I was the greatest. Maybe that will give me a free pass instead of being in the dog house.

Bring up anything you would like.

Never did I say that coyotes were not predatores of deer. I did state that they have not been associated with any deaths with the operation where I live and they do to.

I read every link you posted and none of them came close to aligning with your statement of killing one fawn per day. The closest any came was:

Diefenbach said the only place in which that might not be true is the Southeast, where wildlife managers have found the highest predation rates on fawns by coyotes. In that region, an average of only one in four fawns survives to three months of age. But that is only in combination with extremely low doe-survival rates.

In fact when you read the whole thing, he pretty much states coyotes really don't have much effect on deer populations.

Thanks for digging those up. I hope other here read them too.

Ok Chief I'll give it to you for now wording my post just right,

I'll share a photo my friend took last year. He had this happen more than once. I should ask him if it was back to back days :)

I know one thing is I was feeding my family or myself I would choose young deer over a mouse or a persimmon. Maybe Justins lamb would be tasty.

So how about them Chief's, the foot ball ones?

I think we are all aware that coyotes will eat deer.

Bald eagles also feast on trout, soooooo........ Does that mean bald eagles are a nuisance? (Or a beautiful wild animal just providing for its needs?)
